Albany native Mike Keegan and Jay Wertzler will be hosting the The First (and Probably Last) Annual Capital Region Feline Film and Video Festival for Humans at Spectrum this week.

The Gold Rush
Monday: The AFI 100 series at Proctors is showing a newly-restored version of the Charlie Chaplin film The Gold Rush. Monday various times - $5

Cat videos
Tuesday: The First (and Probably Last) Annual Capital Region Feline Film and Video Festival for Humans will be at The Spectrum. The fest was co-created by Albany native Mike Keegan in San Francisco and the event at the Spectrum is part of a national tour. Tuesday 7 pm - $10

Silent Film Spectacular
Wednesday: The Albany Public Library hosts the first of its new slate of silent films with live scores: The 1926 F.W. Murnau version of Faust, with live score by Blacklight Lighthouse. Wednesday 7 pm, main library - free

Visitors
Friday: EMPAC will be hosting a screening of Visitors, a collaboration between filmmaker Godfrey Reggio (Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi and Naqoyqatsi) and composer Philip Glass, with filmmaker Jon Kane. Blurbage: "Presented by Steven Soderbergh , Visitors reveals humanity's trancelike relationship with technology, which connects humans in extreme emotional states to experiences far outside themselves. Beyond simply relaying information about the historical moment in which we live, the film is a visceral exploration of the senses and the kinds of machinery we've built to expand them." Followed by a discussion with Geodfrey Reggio and RPI professor Langdon Winner. Friday 7 pm -

Other Desert Cities

Capital Rep's production of Other Desert Cities, a comedy-drama by Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright Jon Robin Baitz, continues. It got a good review from the TU. Other Desert Cities will be at Cap Rep through October 19. various times - $20 and up

Arts and sciences

The College of the Future
Tuesday: Chronicle of Higher Education editor at large Jeffrey Selingo will be at Saint Rose for a talk titled "The College of the Future." Blurbage: "As costs continue to rise, more and more students are looking for alternatives to the conventional undergraduate experience. Hybrid learning, three-year degrees and no-frills colleges are going mainstream. Even for traditional students, the college of tomorrow will be much different than the undergrad days their parents fondly recall." Tuesday 7:30 pm, Lally School of Education - free

David Finkel
Thursday: Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author David Finkel will be at UAlbany as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series to talk about his book Thank You for Your Service, about veterans coping with life after war. Chloe Caldwell
Thursday: The Frequency North series at Saint Rose starts its fall season with writer Chloe Caldwell. Blurbage: "A native of Hudson, NY, Chloe Caldwell is the author of the forthcoming novella Women(SF/LD Books, 2014) and the essay collection Legs Get Led Astray (Future Tense Books, 2012). Thursday: University of Delaware professor Martin Brueckner will be at Skidmore for a talk about "American map wars." Blurbage: "This presentation describes the rise of wall maps, in particular map giants measuring five by six feet and more, in the United States during the 1840s and 1850s. Drawing on an archive consisting of nearly five hundred wall maps, Martin Brückner (U. Delaware) will use representative maps from an "industrial" map era --by individual mapmakers, such as Samuel A. Mitchell, Jacob Monk, and teams such as Timothy Ensign & B. W. Thayer--putting special emphasis on map design, materiality, and intertextuality." Thursday 7 pm, Palamountain Hall - free
