Monday: The Palace's movie series is screening The Rocky Horror Picture Show with live shadowcast The Kids of Albany. Monday 7 pm - $7

Metropolis
Wednesday: The Albany Public Library's Silent Film Spectacular series will be screening the Fritz Lang classic Metropolis with live score by lastdayshining. Wednesday 7 pm, main library - free

Film Columbia

Wednesday: The Film Columbia film festival opens in Chatham. The festival runs through Sunday, and includes a bunch of films that are already getting attention because of screenings at other festivals and/or they're eagerly awaited because of stars or directors involved. (If you'd like to attend one of the screenings, try to get tickets ahead, because many screenings sell out.) individual tickets start at $12

Arts and sciences

Steve Case
Tuesday: Steve Case -- of AOL fame -- will be at RPI as part of a daylong program called "Investing in Entrepreneurship." He'll be talking with Shirley Ann Jackson for a conversation titled "Cultivating Data Driven Entrepreneurship." (We can only hope she asks whether he still uses an AOL email address.) Tuesday 3 pm, EMPAC - registration required

Poets
Tuesday: Three poets -- Edward Hirsch, Kimiko Hahn, and Marie Howe -- will be at UAlbany for a reading and discussion about "the importance and future of poetry" as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series. Tuesday 8 pm, uptown campus, performing arts center - free

Michelle Alexander
Wednesday: civil rights lawyer/advocate/legal scholar Michelle Alexander will be at Skidmore for a talk. Alexander is the author of the book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. Wednesday 7:30 pm, Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall - free

Kate Stoneman Day
Wednesday is Albany Law's Kate Stoneman Day, which honors the school's first female graduate and the first woman admitted to the bar in New York State. The keynote as this year's celebration will be from Navanethem Pillay, the former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Wednesday 5 pm, Moot Courtroom - registration required

Kiese Laymon
Thursday: Author Kiese Laymon will be at Saint Rose as part of the Frequency North series. Blurbage:

Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Laymon is the author of a novel, Long Division, and a collection of essays, How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America. Long Division was named one of the Best Books of 2013 by Buzzfeed, Salon, Guernica, Chicago Tribune, MSNBC, Library Journal and the Crunk Feminist Collective among numerous other publications.

Laymon has also written for outlets such as Gawker and ESPN. Thursday 7:30 pm, Events and Athletics Center - free

Mike Glier
Tuesday: The Opalka Gallery at the Sage Colleges opens a retrospective exhibition of work by artist Mike Glier, "Meander, Because You Don't See Much at a March / Mike Glier 1979 - 2013."

Friday: Glier will be at the gallery for a talk and reception. Friday 7 pm - free

Saturday: Comedian Amy Schumer will be at The Palace for a stand-up show. Schumer's Comedy Central series has gotten good reviews over two seasons. And a movie she wrote and stars in -- and directed by Judd Apatow -- is set to be released next year. Saturday 8 pm - $37.50 and up

FilmColumbia has also added a venue in Hudson this year. Films will be screened at the Hudson Lodge (6th and Union) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
