The good cousins

From The Onion: "SCHENECTADY, NY--In a highly disappointing development expected to put a damper on the entire holiday weekend, sources within the Cunningham family confirmed Tuesday that none of the good cousins are coming to this year's Thanksgiving gathering." (Capital Region datelines seem to pop up in The Onion remarkably often...)

I wonder if the frequency with which we show up in The Onion's datelines has anything to do with our rank as the most average metro in America:

Until 2011, The Onion was headquartered in NYC, and a lot of the writing staff had relocated there. It makes sense that "upstate" in general would be a go-to for provincial fun-poking. I don't know if they still have NYC staff after the move to Chicago but maybe it's just old habit.

Also, the word Schenectady itself is just kinda funny. A lot of our place names are, really. My brother flew in from CA and took the train to the city, and later said it seemed like our Slovak grandparents named the towns on the way.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
