"There's nothing in our way except anything from 4 to 6 feet of snow drifts"
Another story from the totally bonkers-level lake effect snow that has buried parts of the Buffalo area: The Buffalo News reports that people have been trapped on the Thruway for 35 hours -- the photo included with the story looks like something from one of those disaster movies where the climate goes crazy and there's any icy apocalypse. And over at Mashable there's an as-told-to account of being trapped on I-90. [Buffalo News] [Mashable]

Maybe I'm missing something, but these people stranded in their cars seem to be there by choice. I know it's a tooooon of snow, but it didn't appear all at once. They got to a point where their cars would no longer move, or they decided to stop along the side of the highway and attempt to wait it out. The person in the 2nd link above was less than a mile from a Home Depot, a Walgreens, a Tops market, two Ted Hortons, and multiple hotels. The trucker in the 1st link was a stone's throw from Wegmens. They didn't have to starve for a day and a half, and they didn't have to sit in a freezing car. I know that with five feet of powdery snow on the ground, it would be very difficult to travel that distance... but how about when they decided to set up camp and start liveblogging the storm?
Is it all a matter of not wanting to abandon your vehicle? If the choice is potentially freeze to death or pick up your towed car the next day, I know what I'm choosing...
