Comments

I would love to see the continued growth of the region in terms of restaurants, businesses, economy and general appreciation of all the area has to offer us.

I would like to see more large and small scale renovation of abandoned buildings in Albany.

I'd like to see the City of Albany blessed with a budget surplus to effect some real infrastructure change, namely its aging sewer system, so we can avoid releases into the Hudson and can start a real conversation about the development of the waterfront.

I would like some changes for Center Square this year. I would love to see all of the 'for rent' storefronts on Lark St to be filled with unique shops and restaurants. A revamping of the Delaware Ave Price Chopper would be so convenient so I don't have to drive across town to grocery shop when there is a store a stone throw away. I also want an ice palace in Washington Park.

I would like to see lark st/surrounding neighborhood transformed into something more like downtown in Saratoga. It would be great to have one place to walk around that is actually nice.

I'd like to see more young people get involved with their neighborhoods. Just because we live in apartments doesn't mean we shouldn't take responsibility for our communities. Let's get together.

I'd like to see people be nicer on the local blog comments sections. it's uber-annoying and such a let down to see so many local people lambast the good things going on in the area and be so negative. a pipe dream, maybe. haha.

Some expansion and love outside downtown Troy. Need a pub in South Central! Anyone...? Bueller...?

A revival of First Friday. The Troy Night Out galleries show a lot more unity than Albany.

would like to see the abandoned store fronts, restaurants, and bars in Albany filled. I live in Albany and find myself always going out to do things in Troy, Saratoga, etc.

I'd like to see an end to corrupt Albany politics.

What? Go big or go home.

I would love to see cleaner streets. As a past resident of Hudson Avenue, that street, and many in the college area, suffer from mass amounts of litter in the gutters.

Small: Better road repair and an Ethiopian restaurant.
Big: The revival of residential and commercial spaces in downtown.

I'd like to see more Brewpubs in Albany, I'm excited for Druthers to open up downtown. The more local brew/food, the better.

I would like to see schenectady make good on their delayed 5 year neighborhood plans and install new sidewalks on my street. Now that the downtown area is well on its way to being revitilized and what looks like a plethera of new retail projects for the city happening, at least in part due to the casino project, now may be the time for the city to address the neighborhood infrastructures. Make home ownership in the city more appealing and get more homes on the tax rolls!

Also, please no one say, "get a wegmans".

I'd like to see more web tech conferences in our area, and become more of a pivotal technology center in the US.

It'll take longer than a year, but I'd like to see us turn the corner from a region that continues to have a collective inferiority complex to one that celebrates all the good things that make it a terrific place to work and live.

I'd like to see less animosity in the city vs. suburbs discussions. We're a close-knit region and this doesn't have to be an all or nothing debate.

I'd love to see Schenectady keep growing the way that it has the past few years - more restaurants, more stores, more things to do within the city!!

I would like to hear more local sports talk on the radio.

A little more love for Lansingburgh!

Help the restoration efforts on Delaware Ave.

I hope to see happier friendlier people.

I'd love to see more giveaways like this one. Seriously the biggest need is more businesses moving to the area (or starting up) and providing more good paying jobs.

I'd like to see Troy figure out how to revitalize while remaining inclusive of all neighborhoods and residents. I believe it can happen!

vegan spots + bikes - litter = 2015

I like the idea of this area becoming my "grandmother's Albany" (in a good way). My grandmother and great-aunt grew up right off Delaware Ave., and they were always telling me stories of the stores and businesses they would frequent, walking miles all over the city. I'm so happy to see these areas that they used to visit become populated, walkable, and fun again. I'd love to see this happen in the warehouse area and Pearl Street/Downtown. That said, I want the businesses to be well-run and add value, but also for us to all commit to supporting them. I'm just so excited that I constantly spotting a new place, or trying a place I haven't gotten around to yet.

Would like to see some renovation/expansion of the Albany waterfront.

I would love for more money to be spent on maintaining (and improving) the cities streets and roadways.

I would love to see a smoking Alive @ 5 line up and the return of the pop-up shops in downtown Albany! Go Downtown!!

I would love to see more kindness amongst all of us who live in this region.

I would like to see casinos everywhere!

I'd love to see my JOB change!

And it would be amazing to have a good gym in Center Square or Hudson/Park, or at least some fitness classes in Washington Park.

We have a few wonderful venues in the area, but currently nothing that fits the niche that Upstate Concert Hall currently caters to. I would love to see the great artists that come through the area get to enjoy downtown Albany or Troy while they're in town, rather than a strip mall in Clifton Park. I've opted out of seeing some great music because I just can't stand that space. Something with good food and drinks just a short walk away? Time for a change!

What I'd like to see change this year ... There's so much talk of job training, education, expansion in the market. But you really don't see it outside of some program you never knew existed because you didn't have the right connections, and now it's conclusion is part of next year's State of the State address.

That's what I'd like to see changed. Take industry trends, turn them into training camps for people to work hard on needed skills for jobs, and actually publicize that these opportunities exist.

And, you know, lowering state taxes, and rent regulation wouldn't be a bad thing either o.o

The re-purposing of old or abandoned building in Albany

I would like to see more expansion and development of the Albany waterfront.

Troy to keep its upward momentum. And less crime.

I'd love to see King's Donut cart in Cambridge bring some of their offerings to the Troy farmer's market!

Albany needs a tortilleria!

For Excelsior Pub to reopen somewhere, preferably Albany.

I'd like to see that huge eyesore of a building in Albany's warehouse district finally demolished. Maybe it could be blown up to the same fanfare as the Wellington Annex. And/or maybe a Hollywood movie could even use the real demo footage for a project.

I know the Central Warehouse has pretty much become an icon in the city but I think that space could be used more wisely.

Also, similar to above comments about Albany's waterfront, I'd like to see *Troy's* waterfront better utilized. So much of the city is on the river and yet it's so blah looking.

Overall, I guess I'd like things to look prettier this year and less like eyesores. :)

Intergenerational Housing would be amazing to see in this area. It is a diverse idea that groups all people together and helps people to develop. Mixed age group and economic class with people who need. Elderly folks and little tots. At-risk youth and 30 somethings. It is amazing!

I would like to see improvements in downtown Albany. Pearl Street has such potential to be a hub for shopping, entertainment, and dining. It has its perks, such as the Hollow and Merry Monk, but it's a dead zone anytime other than weekdays during business hours. It's a shame for Albany residents (myself included) that most of the businesses down there cater to the 9-5 State worker crowd. If just a few big retailers and a few additional restaurants/cafes/bars opened up down there, people would take advantage. Especially with the big events that happen at the Times Union and good music that is always happening at the Hollow, there is opportunity to build on the small successes!

More recreational development of the Capital Region waterfront

An Upstate Concert Hall type venue in Schenectady would be nice.

I would love to see Schenectady have the resurgence that downtown Troy has had.

A collectively improved attitude.

I'd love to see more waterfront business/restaurant/bars opened up in Troy. It would also be amazing to see some open container music events come back to Albany like old times (sigh....)

let's all get excited about giving back this year. if we all do a little, we can make a big difference in the lives of people who need it the most!

Would be great if Schenectady's downtown got the same development as Troy did - waterfront, restaurants, cafes….

I would like to see continued growth in the region and a vibrant downtown.

Ikea and some legit taquerias.

Attitudes.

I'd love a dog walking service north of Albany in the Troy/Watervliet/Waterford area.

More art!

As many tax dollars spent on upkeep, etc in lower income Albany neighborhoods as there are in the wealthier Albany neighborhoods. Newly paved roads, no more long-term blown traffic light or street light bulbs, etc.

And we need a Container Store up here.

I'd love to see a more vibrant downtown--a book store, a grocery, galleries, a hardware store, and an art supply store. More reasons to roam around down here after 5. Also, move Alive at Five to Washington Park, so the traffic noise doesn't pollute the music. Putting I787 below ground in Albany would be nice but that is a pipe dream.

The Troy City Council get their act together and start working together to benefit Troy.

Free community college tuition

I would like to see Albany City government be more friendly to our small business entrepreneurs.

Along the same lines as "bb" and "Katie" --
I would like to see a vibrant downtown on the weekends. I would like more businesses to recognize the demand and opportunity for truly "local" living. "Downtown" doesn't have to be - and shouldn't be - catering so much to state gov't employees and other city workers who aren't residents.

There's a reason realty sites have "walk score" calculators/ratings. Someone take the lead and others will follow.. shopping (retail, grocery, etc) and living spaces should be pursued to revitalize downtown.

I also agree strongly with "Laura" I don't think anyone likes Northern Lights, I mean "Upstate Concert Hall" very much, but there aren't really comparable options.. just spaces like The Hollow or Putnam Den then the Egg and the Palace.

Finish the rail trail from Delmar to Albany

More people moving into the city of Albany.

I'd like to see the revitalization in Schenectady continue and more restaurants and stores added to Erie Blvd, I'd like to see the stretch of Central ave between Albany and Schenectady revitalized with more businesses, and I'd like to see more businesses and stores expanding into the area.

Along with a more developed downtown, I'd like to see some more changes along N. Pearl and Broadway. There are some great restaurants and bars in the area, but the area needs some shops, music venues and residential areas.

Stronger, cleaner and healthier communities based on love and respect for thy neighbor.

i would love to see new businesses in the old Troy Pork Store and Vanilla Bean buildings in Troy's Little Italy neighborhood. A big welcome to new neighbors Collar City Guitars and Miss Dixie's Tattoo Parlor!

Residency Requirement for our police and firefighters. Live here and be part of our community.
More Outdoor Theatre in Troy, Sch'dy and Albany.

I would love to see more support for downtown residents. I lived there for a month and had to move because of some of the nightmarish experiences with neighboring bars and patrons. Have fun, but treat your neighbors with respect.

UBER! Or something similar. With new bars popping up in different areas, we need a better way to bar hop safely. Taxi life in the cap district is poor to say it politely.

What I'd like to change in the Capital Region this year is for the city to have some more of the necessities to encourage more to live/stay in the city. A great start would include: a true gym in downtown Albany, for Price Chopper to actually invest in their Delaware Ave. store, for those newly renovated /converted apartments to be listed for less than $1400/month (I'm looking at you State St. and Broadway), and for some great businesses to fill the holes of the ones that have left.

I would like to see continued growth and revitalization of the Park South corridor - particularly excited to see the way it's transformed when the new luxury townhouses, office and retail space are built near Albany Medical Center.

As a Center Square/Hudson/Park resident and planning student, I'd like to see:
1) Repaved streets in all huge number of places needed.
2) Unnecessary traffic lights replaced with stop signs at a number of intersections.
3) Smart light timing!
4) Replacement of crosswalk "beg buttons" with automatic pedestrian signals at intersections with lots of pedestrians.
5) Continued increases in the frequency of CDTA service.

And for my one big idea:
6) Progress made toward turning 787 into an amazing Lake Shore Drive--style (I moved here from Chicago) boulevard.

More pedestrians. More people spending time outside. More awareness of the rivers and waterways in the region and consideration of their health. More interactions between generations.

More well-organized events and festivals. Less lines, more fun! (Although I do appreciate living in a place that has these events at all!)

I would like to some of the vacant spaces on lark street get purchased and used.

I want the CD to be more open-minded...Less stuck on what HAS been, and more on what COULD be.

I would like to see more businesses open on Delaware Ave. There has been great progress with awesome businesses coming in, but there are still so many vacant store fronts.

For downtown Albany to become the new downtown Troy.

I would like to see less urban sprawl in the Albany area and a greater commitment to green space. Also, a light rail system and faster trains to New York city and Boston would be a great addition as well.

I'd love to see Pearl Street have more stores, similar to Broadway in Saratoga. It'd be great to have some more local businesses to shop and something to keep downtown busy on weekends when it's deserted of state workers.

A revitalization of Lark Street! It's already begun with some great new shops and restaurants, but there are still too many empty storefronts!

The official extinction of the phrase "Smallbany"

I would like to see more small venues for live music. Like the hollow, but more of them, and booking a variety of different types of music

The restoration of old abandoned Albany buildings into rock climbing gyms

I would really love to see the tri-city area work together more to plan community events. We always see such seperation between Albany/Schenectady/Troy even though they are geographically so close. It would be nice if we started treating our area as a metro area intead of little mini-cities living nextdoor to each other.

I would love to see a growth in local businesses downtown Albany and to clear up the messy parking situation. It's a mess on the weekdays and weekends but there's never anything to do! Where do all the people go?! Seriously.

I would like to see more local businesses starting up and succeeding and less cookie cutter mall stores.

I'd like to see people getting more involved in community service and helping the less-fortunate.

I'd like to see a downtown with more open and more happening on weekends. Also some sort of amazing light rail connecting Albany to points north and south!

More bike paths! Beginning with the completion of the rail trail and continuing on . . .

Revitalized Lark St.

I would love to see more of a safe and lively young professional housing area. People looking for a lifestyle of walking to restaurants, friends apartments and bars are often forced to move to downtown Saratoga and endure the dreaded commute. There are so many young professionals living in apartment complexes in the suburbs due to this issue. It would be quite a draw for Albany if there was a central area where young professionals could socialize, feel safe and be a part of a community.

I'm looking forward to the waterfront expansion, and what will happen with making it safer to bike and walk around Albany- whether a new bike lane, rail trail, or crosswalks.

The lack of an Ethiopian restaurant must be addressed. It seems like there are plenty of Ethiopian people, so if one or two or six could please Exodus off the Thruway in this area and start cooking it would be appreciated. I would also like to see Crossgates bulldozed and replaced with a birch forest.

I would like to see more music artists and comedians visit the area.

i would love to see better public transportation! i've been left to fend for a ride more than once by the taxi services we have here and the busses never seem to run when/where i would like them to. that would be super cool. while i am asking - can we also get an ethiopian restaurant and i would like a unicorn. and my dog Dayidleeroth would like to be famous.

Protected bike lanes!

The following things somewhere in the East Greenbush, Schodack, Nassau area: An Indian food restaurant, a really good book store, and a vegetarian restaurant.

I'd like to see laws changed for everyone to have backyard chickens!

Like to see the state stop giving corporate welfare tax breaks to big companies that will just leave the area when they run out and invest in local owner small businesses instead

I would like to see more CDTA routes to the outlying areas such as Duanesburg and Schoharie.

I would like to see more overall growth of the area. I love the projects going on with the Rail Trail and the Thacher Park plans, but parts of downtown Albany feel very empty. I want Albany to be more alive!

I would love to see more dog parks.

More green areas and no smoking/pollution areas for us to enjoy

Free movie nights at the park, in the summer! :)

A grocery store downtown.

I would like to see more random acts of kindness.

more of a community / neighborhood effort made to attract and keep young professionals and starting families downtown

Get rid of the residential parking permit.

I would like to see more vacant farms leased by grass farmers who use holistic management techniques. I would like to see these vacant farms used to produce more local meat to offer to the residence of the Capital District

Joshua Rockwood
West Wind Acres

Continued crackdown on Thruway Authority.
These people try to pass for law enforcement agency while have no such power.
They have the worst customer service ever. Also I once caught them falsifying records in the middle of a toll dispute in order to deny me a refund.

I'd like to see the downtown parking permit system end.

I would like to see the 787 bridge torn down and efforts made to reconnect Albany with its waterfront.

High speed rail to NYC will have to happen someday. It will change everything.

I would like to see more public transport options linking Albany to Saratoga.

I'd like to see more restaurants and businesses open in downtown Albany (Pearl, Lark and Broadway).

We've got a lot of service industry jobs, but I'd like to see more job growth in other sectors.

I would love to see high speed rail, and an Ethopian restaurant.

Plans made for the dismantling of 787 and the reuniting Albany with its waterfront.

Remove 787, connect the river to the city. I can dream.

Wider shoulders of roads to make bicycling easier and safer.

More commitment to bike friendly travel - bike lanes/paths/connectors. I travel by two wheels as much as possible (if weather permits) but sometimes it just isn't feasible. In addition, PSAs for to educate drivers about sharing space with bicycle riders.

Completion of the Rail Trail! and for that matter more places for safe family bike riding that you don't have to get into your car and drive to because the streets are literally unbikable!

The thing I would love to see changed in 2015 is traffic behavior. Like it or not, the new traffic cameras are being installed... so I just hope that people will abide by them so the roads are safer.

I would like to see Uber or Lyft introduced to the Capital region so we no longer need to rely on the current taxi services.

I'd like to see a new music venue open in Troy. I miss Rev Hall!

Clique I know...I would love to see an aquarium or zoo. We need something to attract people from outside the area and I personally do not think a casino is the right choice.

Restructuring of the albany snow removal and highway inclement weather procedures.

I'd love to see more drivers and pedestrians respecting the rules of the road. Drivers: slow down and stop running red lights! Pedestrians: use those crosswalks and stop playing "Dare" with drivers.

I'd like to see the economic disparity in the city improve. 34% of Albany's children live below the federal poverty level.
Great things are happening here, just not for everyone.

Better coordination between and/or motion sensors on traffic lights. Albany traffic lights are actually the WORST.

A girl can dream...

More independent restaurants with different flavors- I need Ramen!

I'd love to see the landfill diminish at least a little bit, and see every resident be given city-issued garbage and recycling totes. And I would love to see myself win this prize pack.

The development of light rail in the region...

Better nightlife public transportation for nearby suburbs! Connect more residents to downtown Albany for good food, drink, and economic stimulus!

I'd like to see at least one or two retail shops open in downtown Albany.

I'd love to see even more growth with the creative economy - more arts, live music, shows, art gallery events, and a wider range of events.

More downtown literary events/readings!

More acoustic concerts at small venues like Proctors and the Egg, like the WGNA Secret Star Concerts.

I'd love to see more restaurants offer vegetarian friendly options that aren't just pasta! How about a little protein??

A farmer's market in Townsend Park!

For something as wonderfully delicious to replace Crisan (#toosoon) on Lark Street

I would love to see a women owned business open up here that allows all the parents i know who are pining to do meaningful, paid work to work part time hours. Sigh. Someday.

In 2015, I'd like to see more people getting involved with their communities. I'm talking about college students volunteering at things like Lark Fest, Tulip Fest, and Restoration Festival. Friends heading down to Troy Bike Rescue and offering free fixes. Families spending a weekend morning helping a local farm pick their crops. Our cities have SO much to offer and it's time we give back some time, build up the Capital Region, and make some friends along the way.

Would love to see something become of the Albany Central Warehouse. It has been an eyesore in the city for years!

I will second the need for a Container Store here, as well as a Lush store.

I'd like to see more locally-owned bookstores pop up around the Capital District.

I'd like to see the beginning of BIG ideas, such as a subway in Albany connected to surface lines to Schenectady, Cohoes (serving Troy), Altamont, Averill Park and Ravena (to start). A realistic plan to bring the concrete jungle that splits the city from the river and, of course, the paving of city streets and construction (reconstruction) of sidewalks, along with severe narrowing of lanes to reduce speed and allow for perpendicular parking.

I'd love to see more cool local businesses along the lines of nine pin cider and fort orange general store in Albany. Cool places period. Not cool for Albany or cool for upstate. Just cool.

Embrace bicycles; more lanes, more bells, more fun for all!

I want to see the continued growth of restaurant options in Center Square.

a better downtown Albany!!!

One thing small that would be great would be a store that sells great strawberry pie! Picky I know but I would love to have a simple, tasty strawberry pie.

I'd like to see more people remember that we're all part of one community and that we need to pay attention to the world outside of our own narrow lives. This could take many froms, from supporting local businesses and events to helping a neighbor down the street. I'd just like to see the region become less atomized.

new local businesses on Lark street and a vibrant downtown with shopping, dining, and entertainment that is connected to the waterfront.

Gosh - everyone has such great ideas!! Even if a couple of them come to pass we'll be a much better city. I'll say I hope the Mayor's efforts to overhaul our zoning provide the fundamentals for a lot of the ideas above.

Plus I'm with you on the store the sells strawberry pie, Paul.

I would like to see as many traffic signals replaced by roundabouts as possible, and the sooner the better.

I'd like to see real enthusiasm in making the Capital Region an exciting place to call home! Let's make things happen, and let's support the people and places that make things happen!

I would like to see a walkable street in Albany like Broadway St. of Saratoga.

More museums.

- less overpricing, fewer days on market of real estate for sale
- lower property taxes in downtowns
+ changes Sandy listed
+ construction of 2-4 family or multi-generational housing or 1-family house w/ guest house
+ improve urban school districts or at least provide stats to allay parents' & potential parents' fears abt living downtown
+ local effective altruism org with expertise in areas other EA centers lack

Automated snow, ice, & junk removal...will this ever happen?

A *good* rooftop bar. Taste had a great rooftop but was only open to the public for a handful of events :(

need new manager to train for Lee Lin so I can retire, take care of grandchildren, teach Chinese, etc.

more investment opportunities for non-accredited investors

A new school superintendent for Albany - one who is less concerned with handing out contracts to crony consultants and more concerned with making our city schools shine for all students! There is plenty to be proud of in our Albany City Schools, but the administration is DREADFUL.

a more walk-able downtown area!

I'd love to see an IKEA or a Carmax nearby!

I'd like the traffic lights at Eagle St. and State St. to be better timed so pedestrians can cross more safely. It is a waiting game when commuting by foot from my apartment in the Mansion District to my job downtown.

I'd like to see the spaces where Legends on Lark and Dejohn's were be replaced with something....anything...!

I'd like to see the charter schools in Albany stay afloat to keep molding our city youth

I would like to see more people buying local and supporting our home-grown small-business owners and downtown shopping districts!

Since 787 will never be moved underground, how nice would it be to see an elevated promenade in addition to Jennings Landing along the Hudson? We love the Corning Preserve and the bike path, but after that, there's not much to do.

I'd like to see more potholes patched.

The continued improvement in Troy.

I'd like to see further development of the old railroad lines that are being turned into walkways and bikeways/cross country skiways, including clean up and /or rebuilding of the overpasses over roads and creeks.

I'd like to see continued development of Delaware Ave.

A great change would be if the Spectrum would show more family movies. I love going to see the independent and avant-garde and occasionally the mainstream flick with friends but with 8 screens it'd be nice if they could put a G or PG movie on one screen so I could take a walk with my first grader to our neighborhood movie theater to see a movie. Don't mind driving to the Madison and but do hate going to the mall; would be so nice to be able to walk in our neighborhood to see a movie with a kid.

Bike lanes! Like... REAL bike lanes, not just the little cyclists painted in the almost-center of the driving lanes. It would make both drivers & bikers happier and safer and encourage an excellent alternative form of transportation.

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind.
