New York City as city state
Here's another look at the break-up-New York State topic, this time with the focus on New York City as something more along the lines of city state and a review of its contributions to state revenue.
But: NYC can blame the legislature for not letting it do what it wants, but the legislature is largely controlled by... representatives from NYC and its immediate area. So, yeah, maybe some of this is about money, but it's also about local control, something Albany -- the actual Albany, not "Albany" -- and other cities can probably agree on with NYC.

It baffles my mind that this is not one of the top issues in our State's political discourse.

The most insightful point is about how you can go on with a secession exercise like this indefinitely - e.g., Manhattan should secede, because it subsidizes the other boroughs, urban areas should secede from rural areas, etc.
Separating into two states will solve little, except then we'd have two entities with a boatload of problems. Instead, let's spend our energy addressing key the key issues at hand - what is a fair distribution of taxes? what would fair representation look like? etc.

I'm more interested in splitting up the U.S. into 4-6 countries than splitting up NY. There's much more disparity nationwide, especially non-economic measures like culture.
