The week ahead

hannibal buress comedian

Here are a few things to keep in mind, look forward to, or keep busy with this week, from the weather (lots of snow to start), to Laverne Cox, to Peter Carey, to entrepreneurs, to Hannibal Buress, to cooking classes, to music...

Weather

Here's the paraphrased forecast for this week:
Monday: Lots of snow. Maybe 14 inches by the time it's over Monday night. Highs around 17.
Tuesday: Sunny and 19.
Wednesday: Cloudy, maybe some snow. Highs around 30.
Thursday: Sunny and 19..
Friday: Sunny and 16.
Weekend: Cloudy, low 20s.

There's a winter storm warning for Monday. The Capital Region is pegged for 10-14 inches.

This isn't a coastal storm, and those tend to be a bit more predictable. NWS Albany calls it "a high confidence forecast." Or, to put it another way: The NWS probabilistic snowfall accumulation map has Albany in a zone with a 95 percent chance of at least 8 inches of snow.

Laverne Cox

Tuesday: Actress and transgender activist Laverne Cox will be at UAlbany for a talk. Cox is famous for playing the role of Sophia on Orange is the New Black. Her talk at UAlbany, part of the university's sexuality week, is titled "Ain't I a Woman." Monica Bill Hughes
Tuesday: Local visual artist Monica Bill Hughes will be at Sage's Opalka Gallery in Albany to talk about her work. From her website:

My paintings and drawings probe notions of femininity, sexuality, and vulnerability. A cast of hybrid, female characters inhabit odd, yet familiar domestic spaces. Using imagery found in cookbooks, medical textbooks, vintage porn magazines, and household catalogs, I synthesize and reimagine the female body. After extracting imagery from its original context, I knit together a new variation on the female nude. The women I create are powerful yet vulnerable, fulfilled yet unsettled, perhaps even insatiable.

Her talk is the first in the spring season of Sage's Artist Lecture Series. Tuesday 6:30 pm, Sage Albany campus, Opalka Gallery - free

Let the Fire Burn / Jason Osder
Friday: Documentary director Jason Osder will be at UAlbany as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series. He'll there for a screening of, and talk about, his film Let The Fire Burn.
