Crossing danger
Over at Strong Towns there's a critique-from-afar of the Albany intersection of Central Ave and Quail Street in light of the collision that killed four-year-old Ashiqur Rahman last week. Charles Marohn frames the incident and others involving cars and pedestrians as "statistically inevitable" given the way most roads are designed. See also: Chris Churchill on the same topic, from this weekend: "[W]e all deserve blame for creating an environment in which cars rule and pedestrians are second-class citizens." I've been following Strong Towns for years. He's got some good ideas about how to build safer, fiscally sound and socially vibrant communities. Start with the Central Ave. article, then read the rest of the site. He has some provocative ideas about how suburban sprawl resembles a Ponzi scheme, for example.
I missed it when he spoke in North Adams a few years ago. I'd love it if he came here.
