UAlbany basketball one game away from NCAA tournament

Thumbnail image for ualbany sports logoBoth the UAlbany men's and women's basketball teams are set to play for a spot in the NCAA tournament later this week.

The men's team, which won the regular season conference title, will face #2 conference seed Stony Brook this Saturday at 11 am (because TV) at the SEFCU Arena in the title game of the American East conference tournament. The Great Danes beat New Hampshire 60-58 on Sunday in the semifinal. UAlbany and Stony Brook split the conference season series.

Tickets go on sale to the general public Tuesday at 10 am. The game will also be on ESPN2.

The women's team, which also finished atop the regular season conference standings, will face Hartford at 4:30 pm on Friday at SEFCU Arena (also on ESPNU). The Great Danes demolished UMBC 66-37 in the semifinal to advance to the title game (they held UMBC to just 9 first half points). UAlbany beat Hartford in both regular conference games this year.

Both the men's and women's teams have been a successful run to the NCAA tournament in recent years -- this could be three straight years for the men and the fourth straight year for the women.

Siena? Both the Siena men's and women's teams lost over the weekend in the MAAC tournament at the TU Center. The men's conference championship game is tonight (Monday) at the TU Center -- Iona takes on Manhattan at 9 pm (because it will be on ESPN2). On the women's site, Quinnipiac faces Marist at 4:30 pm at the TU Center (it's also on ESPNU).
