Monday: The Front Parlor storytelling series is back at the Olde English in Albany. This month's theme: "Lies & Liars." Monday 7:30 pm

Nitty Gritty
Tuesday: The Nitty Gritty Poetry Slam is at The Low Beat with an open slam night. sign up at 7 pm, open mic at 7:30 pm, slam at 8 pm - $5

St. Patrick's Day

It's Tuesday. And it tends to be a popular holiday in the Capital Region. The parades and some of the whatnot were this past weekend, but a bunch of places of will be hopping this Tuesday.

Stage

Souvenir
Tuesday-Sunday: This is the last week for Capital Rep's production of Souvenir. The comedy with music is based on the story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a wealthy amateur soprano... who couldn't sing. The production runs through March 22. Tuesday-Sunday various times - $20 and up

Murder Ballad
Tuesday: Maybe something a bit different -- Peck's Arcade in Troy will be hosting a Troy Civic Theater production of Murder Ballad, a rock musical. "Audiences at the Peck's performance will be immersed in the story, set in a working bar in New York." (There will be food and beverage service from The Confectionery.) Tuesday 7 pm - $15 / $13 seniors and students

Arts and sciences

Building a high-tech economy
Thursday: Albany Law is hosting a symposium on "the intersection of innovation and economic development" -- covering topics such as nanotech and semiconductors, biotech and healthcare, and energy. Thursday 8:30 am-6:30 pm - registration required

Frequency North doubleheader
Thursday: The Frequency North series at Saint Rose has an event featuring two writers -- Leah Umansky, author of the "Mad Men"-inspired chapbook Don Dreams and I Dream, and "gritty confessional memoirist" Sean H. Doyle. Thursday 7:30 pm, Events and Athletics Center (420 Western Ave) - free

Mohawk watershed
Friday: Union College is hosting the annual Mohawk Watershed Symposium. This year's keynote speaker is John Lipscomb, patrol boat captain for Riverkeeper. Other speakers include Paul Tonko on future planning based on the experience of Irene flooding, and Christopher Swain, who swam the entire length of the Mohawk last year. Friday 8:30 am-5:30 pm - registration required

Pasties, Pencils, and Pints

Thursday: Sassy drink 'n draw Pasties, Pencils, and Pints is at The Hangar in Troy. This month's model is burlesque performer Teasy Roosevelt. Cash bar. (And it's bring your own drawing supplies.) Thursday 8:30 pm - $10

Classes

Gourmet burgers
Wednesday: Gio Culinary Studio has a hands-on class about making gourmet burgers from scratch. "Students will learn to grind different cuts of steak together to create the ultimate gourmet burger! We will also be making our own fresh baked buns, duck bacon, condiments, toppings and French Fries all from scratch!" Wednesday 6:15 pm - $65

Writing what you know
Wednesday: Marion Roach Smith's popular class on memoir writing starts at the Arts Center of the Capital Region. "[W]riting about yourself and your crazy (or not-so-crazy) family can be the big vein, if you're ready, or the brick wall, if you're not. This course will help you dig among your stuff and get it down on paper in some interesting, funny, enlightening, compelling, readable and possibly saleable way. Let's go. It's there for the mining." Wednesdays through May 6 at 6 pm - $410

Garden planning
Friday: 9 Mile Farm's Rebekah Rice will be at Honest Weight leading a class on garden planning. "Do you want to grow more of your vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruits? Rebekah can show you how! Bring information about your garden space and learn to make a realistic plan." Friday 6 pm - free (registration required)
