Driving the future
A follow-up of sorts that post last week about the Capital Region's transportation future... Vox condensed a recently released study that attempted to model how self-driving cars would affect Austin -- and the results pointed toward fewer cars, less need for parking, and cheaper tax service. (One of the secondary effects we wonder about: To what degree would the popularity of private self-driving car services undercut support for public transit?) [Vox]

Hopefully, self-driving vehicles become a replacement for (or at least major supplement to) current public transit. Imagine how great it would be if there were a fleet of these vehicles available to the public. You'd call one up on an app, it shows up, and takes you where you're going. I always dream of something out of Minority Report (minus the private ownership part), where there are all of these self-driving cares taking everyone where they need to go. Granted, for things like commuting, etc., where there are many people headed to the same place, there would be larger self-driving vehicles to do so. (But, I'm sure the app will organize and coordinate rides.)
I'm from the burbs and I'd sign up for this in a heartbeat.
