Albany Wordfest

The 2015 Albany Word Fest runs this week through Saturday. It includes readings, open mics, poetry slams, films, and other spoken word events at various venues. Here's the schedule.

Streetfilms

Monday: The Madison Theater is hosting a "mini-festival" of films from the influential Streetfilms project, which is focused on urban planning, cycling, and transit. The event is being organized by the Albany Protected Bike Lane Coalition, which (as the name would imply) is working to get protected bike lanes built in the city. We hear that about eight short films will be screened, with a total runtime of about 45 minutes. Monday 7 pm (info tables at 6:15 pm) - free

Downtown Albany restaurant week

Downtown Albany Restaurant Week continues through Friday. Fifteen restaurants will be offering three-course menus for $20.15. (Reservations are a good idea.)

Tuesday: The Front Parlor storytelling series is back at the Ale House in Troy. This month's theme: "bodies." Tuesday 7:30 pm

Arts and sciences

Following the feminine in Shakespeare's plays
Monday: Shakespeare expert Tina Packer will be at UAlbany for a talk based on her new book Women of Will: Following The Feminine in Shakespeare's Plays. It's the annual Burian Lecture, and part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series. Monday 8 pm, UAlbany uptown campus, Performing Arts Center - free

Alice McDermott
Wednesday: Award-winning novelist Alice McDermott will be at RPI as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series. Here appearance is part of the 74th annual McKinney Writing Contest. Wednesday 8 pm, Biotechnoolgy and Interdisciplinary Studies Building - free

The Catskills
Wednesday: The State Museum's series of research and collections lectures focuses on the Catskills this week -- how they were formed, and how they're now wearing down. Wednesday 7 pm - free

Milk
Thursday: Albany Law is hosting a panel discussion: "​New York State's Dairy Industry: Family Farms, Price Supports and the Raw Milk Controversy." Thursday 4:15 pm, Room 200 - free

Jeffrey Tambor

Thursday: Actor Jeffrey Tambor -- from Arrested Development and Transparent -- will be at EMPAC for a talk titled "Performing Your Life." It's described as "part one-man show, part seminar, part question-and-answer session, and endlessly entertaining ... This down to earth conversation is about using life experiences to advise others to face their fears, attain their goals, and break out of their shell." Tickets for the event are available free to the general public, pending availability, at the EMPAC box office. Be sure to check the Rensselaer Union FB page for updates about availability. Beauty and the Beast

Thursday: A touring production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast opens a four-day run at Proctors. Thursday-Sunday various times - $20 and up

Big fat NO!
That fee goes towards road improvement.
A few years ago a rudes , swearing man drove hi bike into my sisters's parked car door.
He swore at her ,and speeded away leaving over $300 in damages to her car!
