Dog's best friend
A Troy man fought off a bear that attacked his dog while walking in a preserve on the southwestern edge of the Adirondacks this week, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
From the press release: "The bear attacked the dog and then the dog owner after the man tried to separate the animals. He was able to strike the bear on the nose with a stick causing the bear to run away. Both the victim and his dog suffered bites, scratches and puncture wounds."
DEC says the man's injuries were not considered life threatening. (We hope the dog is OK, too.) Here's the DEC page on how to handle a bear encounter. [NYS DEC]
