The Furgary
Maybe while riding the train you've noticed those shacks along the Hudson River on the north side of the city of Hudson -- the North Bay Shacks, or Furgary Shacks. It turns out those shacks have a long history, maybe stretching back as far as the 1880s, and the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation recently issued a report indicating the shacks are eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Places of Historic Significance. Here's the background on the shacks, and the recent fight over whether they should be removed. [Register Star] [Hudson River Zeitgeist]

I hope something can be done to preserve and interpret some of these shacks as historic sites. For too long historic preservation has been focused on the lives of the wealthy while being happy to raze the structures associated with working class life.
