New York State has yet to make its drivers licenses match up with the federal "Real ID" standards -- and that could, theoretically, make NY drivers licenses invalid as a form of ID for boarding an airplane starting sometime next year (you'd need a passport). The state DMV downplayed the issue to Gannett, saying it's filed for an extension with the feds while it sorts things out. [US DHS] [Travel and Leisure] [Gannett]

So those new fancy NYS licenses don't have the proper federal standards?

J. - that is not about a fancy looking license. This is more about information sharing. My understanding is that Real thing effectively is a federal ID program since state has only limited say in what is going on.

This is pretty unbelievable, if it comes to pass. Does anyone know if the "Enhanced License", which gets you into Canada without a passport, would fulfill the requirements?
