Troy elections

Tuesday: The Troy Neighborhoods Action Council is hosting a meet-the-candidates night for the hotly-contested Troy mayoral race and the city council elections this November. Tuesday 6 pm, Troy Middle School Auditorium (1976 Burdett Ave) - free

Arts and sciences

The transformation of marriage
Monday: Noted marriage historian Stephanie Coontz will be at Union for a talk titled "For Better AND Worse: Gender, Class, and the Transformation of Marriage." (Coontz's talk is part of a semester-long look at income inequality.) Monday 7 pm, Nott Memorial - free

Neuroscience
Tuesday: Journalist Casey Schwartz will be at the State Museum as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series to talk about her new In the Mind Fields: Exploring the New Science of Neuropsychoanalysis -- "a witty, accessible, and entertaining introduction to new developments in brain science." Tuesday 8 pm, State Museum's Huxley Theater - free

The art of video game design
Tuesday: Architect/art exhibition designer Virginia Durruty will be at Opalka Gallery on the Sage Albany campus to talk about the exhibit From Concept to Console: Art and Aesthetics in Video Game Design, which she designed. Tuesday 6:30 pm - free

"The Terror and Promise of Forensic Brain Science"
Thursday: Loretta Preska, chief judge of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, will be at Saint Rose for a talk titled "Law and Neuroscience: The Terror and Promise of Forensic Brain Science." Following the talk will be a panel discussion that includes Richard Hartunian, US Attorney for the Northern District of New York, defense attorney E. Stewart Jones, and Saint Rose professor of psychology Robert Flint. Thursday 5:30 pm, Lally School (1009 Madison Ave) - free (pre-registration required)

4000 Miles

Tuesday: Capital Rep's production the dramedy 4000 Miles continues this week. It runs through October 18. Tuesday-Sunday various times - $20 and up

EMPAC

Mark Fell and France Jobin
Wednesday: Multidisciplinary artists Mark Fell and France Jobin will be at EMPAC to talk about their work in electronic music, choreography, and sound design. (They both will be presenting work at EMPAC this month.) Wednesday 7 pm - free

Recursive Frame Analysis
Thursday-Friday: Speaking of which... Mark Fell will be presenting Recursive Frame Analysis in the EMPAC theater -- it's "a new work for light, sound, and human movement" that Fell has been working on EMPAC. Thursday-Friday 8 pm each night - $18

Cooking

As the weather cools down, it can be a good time to take a cooking class. A few this week:

Tuesday: Korean 101 | Different Drummer's
Caroline Barrett leading a class on the basics of Korean cuisine: quick kimchi, bulgogi, bibimbap, haemul pa jeon (green onion and shrimp pancakes). 6 pm - $65
