US vs. Canada

If you were concerned about how things would match-up in the Maple Syrup Conflict of 2024 between the United States and Canada, know that it'll be Albany versus Montreal in the first round. At least, that's what we took from this interview with the author of War Plan Red, a book about the respective US and Canadian plans to invade each other. [The Morning News]

I was on vacation this year in Quebec City and we visited the Musee de la Civilisation (think New York State Museum for Eastern Canada) and there was actually some intriguing exhibits highlighting America’s attempt to invade Canada (Quebec specifically), especially during and shortly after the Revolutionary War, which my history lessons in NYS seemed to ignore or gloss over. Our revolutionary ancestors thought the French loving Canadians would want to side with us, since “why wouldn’t they, the French were on our side, and the British were occupiers in North America.”

Apparently, that was not the message received by Canadians, nor did they want to be roped into a war. Maybe we can chalk it up to the fierce independence of those “French” Canadians. The museum was fair though, detailing a few failed efforts by Canada to invade America and annex some of our land.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
