Motown the Musical
Tuesday-Sunday: A touring production of Motown the Musical will be at Proctors. The show is based on the story of the Motown record label and includes more than 60 songs from the label. Tuesday-Sunday various times - $20 and up
Arts and sciences
Jason Reynolds
Tuesday: Novelist Jason Reynolds will be at the State Museum as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series. Blurbage: "Jason Reynolds, prize-winning author of young adult fiction set in urban, African-American communities, and written for 'teenage boys who don't like to read,' will read from his new novel about policing, profiling, and black-white relations, All American Boys (2015, with Brendan Kiely)..." Tuesday 7 pm, State Museum Huxley Theater - free
Native Peoples of Hudson Valley
Wednesday: The State Museum is hosting an event about the history of Native Americans in the Hudson Valley. Blurbage: "At this time of year people often refer to the role of Native Americans in the founding of what became the United States of America. These origin stories, however, combine fact and myth. come learn about the actual history of Native peoples in the Hudson Valley from Archaeologist Michael Lucas and Jon Lothrop at a special [Albany] City Hall Rotunda Event at the New York State Museum." Galleries at the museum will be open to the public until 7 pm after the talks. Wednesday 5 pm (it looks like the talks start at 5:30 pm) - free
The Brothers Vonnegut
Thursday: Ginger Strand will be at the State Museum for a talk about her nonfiction book The Brothers Vonnegut: Bernard Vonnegut and Kurt Vonnegut in the House of Magic. Blurbage:
The story is set in General Electric's Schenectady research facility, where Bernard worked as a scientist and Kurt in public relations. It is a wild collision of science and literature set against the backdrop of atomic anxiety, would-be weather warriors, and the dawn of the digital world. She will also discuss her use of manuscripts, letters, GE dossiers, and interviews to trace the fascinating story of two brothers grappling with the moral dilemmas of their time.
Strand's talk is both part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series and is a keynote for the Researching New York Conference. Thursday 7:30 pm, State Museum Clark Auditorium - free

Friday: There's a release party at The Low Beat for Daniel Nester's new memoir Shader. Nester will be reading from the book, and there will be music as well as "some surprises and goodies." Friday 6 pm

The final scheduled performances of the Old Songs Inc. production "Down with the Rent" The Anti-Rent Rebellion of New York are this weekend. A concert of New York State’s hidden history in a performance of authentic songs and stories written and sung by Anti-Rent protestors in the 1840s.
