Chinese New Year
Monday is the start of the Chinese New Year (also known as Lunar New Year) -- the year of the Monkey.
Some Chinese restaurants around the area -- such as A La Shanghai and Rain Modern Chinese -- will be offering special new year dinners or menus. And reservations are good idea (at some places they're required).
Arts and sciences
Science Cafe: Birds and Beer
Tuesday: The first Science Café event at the City Beer Hall will feature State Museum curator of birds Jeremy Kirchman in a conversation with Craig Gravina. (As mentioned earlier.) Tuesday 6 pm - free (food and drink not included)
Historic Rapp Road Community
Tuesday: Albany City Hall hosts an event about the history of the city's historic Rapp Road Community, a place where African-American families from Mississippi settled after moving north. Beverly Bardequez, a third-generation resident of the neighborhood, and F. Maxine Fantroy-Ford, who grew up there, will be talking about the neighborhood's history. Tuesday 5 pm - free
Coloring book night
Wednesday: The Schenectady County Public Library is hosting another coloring night for adults. "We will have relaxing music, beautiful patterns, coloring markers & pencils, and hot drinks while we enjoy a peaceful hour of coloring." Wednesday 6:30 pm, central library - free
New York State Author and Poet
Thursday: The new New York State Author -- Edmund White -- and the new State Poet -- Yusef Komunyakaa -- will be inaugurated at UAlbany in an event that will also include readings. Thursday 8 pm, downtown campus, Page Hall - free
Digital tech and the arts
Thursday: Hui Su -- the head of the Cognitive and Immersive Systems Laboratory, a partnership between IBM and RPI -- will be at EMPAC for a discussion with EMPAC director Johannes Goebel "as to where and how computing and the human condition meet." Thursday 7 pm - free

Tuesday: The Front Parlor storytelling series celebrates its 5-year anniversary at The Ale House. This month's theme is "Extra Mile." Tuesday 7:30 pm
Naked Influence
Tuesday-Sunday: Capital Rep continues its production of the new play Naked Influence, "about a charismatic exotic dancer who finds herself engulfed in a doomed relationship with a congressman." Tuesday-Sunday various times - $20 and up
