Presidents Day

It's Monday, of course. It's a federal holiday, so things like banks and the post office will be closed. By the way: Presidents Day is pegged to the birthday of George Washington, which is February 22. It's one of the reasons you'll sometimes see the holiday referred to as "Washington's Birthday."

Wrongfully imprisoned
Monday: Johnny Hincapie -- who served 25 years in prison for a NYC murder conviction based on a false confession -- will be at Saint Rose with his team of investigators to talk about his case. Monday 1 pm, Lally School of Education (1009 Madison Ave) - free

Award-winning poets
Tuesday: Award-winning poets Randall Horton and Jacqueline Jones LaMon will be at UAlbany as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series. Tuesday 7 pm, University Art Museum - free

Thursday: Award-winning poet Sherwin Bitsui will be at UAlbany for reading as part of the NYS Writers Institute. Thursday 4:15 pm, Science Library, uptown campus - free

"When We Were Liberal: Explaining the Twentieth Century"
Wednesday: Skidmore historian Jennifer Delton will be a talk about liberalism in the United States. "There was a time not so long ago when liberalism was the dominant political ideology of the United States. And then it wasn't. While much has been written about why it failed, this talk examines the reasons it was as successful as it was in the twentieth century." Delton's talk is this year's Moseley Faculty Research Lecture. Wednesday 8 pm, Palamountain Hall - free

On Screen/Sound
Thursday: The On Screen/Sound series at EMPAC continues with two films "that explore the act of vocalization--both embodied in an on-screen speaker and as sound and images disembodied from the actor." Thursday 7 pm - $6

Hoop

Wednesday: The UAlbany men's basketball team, second in the America East standings, takes on Stony Brook, first in the conference standings, at SEFCU Arena. Wednesday 7 pm - $12 and up

History Happy Hour

Thursday: The Ten Broeck Mansion in Albany is hosting the latest History Happy Hour. Blurbage: "[S]ip and mingle with like-minded history buffs at one of the region's premier historic homes, Albany's Ten Broeck Mansion, and enjoy a selection of local beer, wine, and hors d'oeuvres. Wednesday: Chicken parts versus the whole | Arts Center of the Capital Region
Jillian Naveh leads a class in which "you'll learn how to fabricate a whole chicken into parts, as well as cook the whole chicken to taste the difference between the two preparations." 6 pm - $67.50

New York in Bloom

Friday: The annual New York in Bloom show at the State Museum opens and continues through the weekend. "Over a hundred elegant floral arrangements designed by local floral designers, flower enthusiasts and garden club members are on display in the Museum's galleries this weekend.
