Today's moment of winter
While walking Otto around Buckingham Pond this past Saturday morning we noticed what, from far away, looked like snow. But... it hadn't snowed overnight. And then, after a closer look, it appeared to be... feathers of ice?
The whole surface of the frozen pond was covered in these feathery frozen structures, like someone had emptied an enormous bag of down. They were beautiful up close.
Curious about these structures formed, we did a little bit of research about them. And the best we guess we come up with is that they might be a form of rime ice, formed by fog that froze. Here's an io9 post about how it forms. (Maybe you can identify it.)
A few more pics are after the jump if you'd like to gawk.

Ya know, on my 9pm dog walk by Buckingham Pond last night, there was a tiny dusting of big snowflakes on the ground. I wonder if the structures on the pond grew from those original snowflakes.
