Disney Fantasia Live in Concert
Thursday: Proctors is hosting "Disney FANTASIA-Live in Concert," a screening of scenes from Fantasia (and Fantasia 2000) with a live score from the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. Thursday 7:30 pm - $20 and up

Arts and sciences

John Krakauer
Tuesday: Journalist John Krakauer will be at UAlbany as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series. Krakauer is famous for books such as Into the Wild and Into Thin Air. His appearance at UAlbany will be for Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town. Blurbage:

on Krakauer, journalist, mountaineer, and bestselling nonfiction author, uses a college town in Montana to underscore the national issue of college sexual assault in his latest book, Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town (2015). Taking the town as a case study he investigates a series of rape cases that occurred in Missoula over a four-year period, focusing on the victims and the deficiencies of the justice system that is responsible for investigating and prosecuting the reported crimes.

Endangered buildings
Tuesday: Historic Albany has a "pub lecture" at Restaurant Navona to discuss its recently released endangered buildings list. "Learn about the process behind the list, and what these themes mean for Albany. For instance, what are zombie buildings, and how do they affect surrounding neighborhoods?" Tuesday 5:30 pm - free to attend (but reservation required, see link for info)

Sherry Turkle
Thursday: MIT psychologist Sherry Turkle will be at Union for a talk about her research into how digital technologies affect people and their relationships with each other. Blurbage:

Often referred to as the "Margaret Mead of digital culture," Turkle has investigated the intersection of digital technology and human relationships from the early days of personal computers to the current world of robotics, artificial intelligence, social networking and mobile connectivity.

Duane Michals
Thursday: Photographer Duane Michals will be at Skidmore for a talk about this career as an art photographer. Blurbage:

In an era heavily influenced by photojournalism, Michals manipulated the medium to communicate narratives. The sequences, for which he is widely known, appropriate cinema's frame-by-frame format. Michals has also incorporated text as a key component in his works. Rather than serving a didactic or explanatory function, his handwritten text adds another dimension to the images' meaning and gives voice to Michals's singular musings, which are poetic, tragic, and humorous, often all at once.

Thursday: The On Screen/Sound series at EMPAC continues with "a selection of films and videos that play with the relationship between textual and spoken language." Thursday 7 pm - $6

Wednesday: Gio Culinary Studio is hosting a hands-on cooking class about making ramen (including homemade noodles). "Students will learn how to create delicious, homemade ramen all from scratch! We will be using fresh natural ingredients along with professional and traditional techniques that are easily duplicated at home." Wednesday 6:15 pm - $60

Siena men
Monday: The Siena men's basketball team will be taking on Iona at the TU Center. The Saints are coming off a 20-point win at Rider on Friday. Monday 7 pm - $8 and up

UAlbany women
Thursday: The UAlbany women's basketball team faces UMass Lowell at SEFCU Arena. The Great Danes share the top spot in the America East right now with Maine, at 13-1 in conference. Thursday 7 pm - $5 and up

The Bridge Jazz Festival

Looking ahead to the weekend: The Bridge Jazz Festival returns to the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall (Friday) and the Massry Center at Saint Rose (Saturday). This year's lineup includes Nnenna Freelon, Pierre Bensusan, the Tim Olsen and Eric Walentowicz Duo, Ellis and Delfeayo Marsalis, The No BS!Brass Band, and the Arch Stanton Quartet.
