UAlbany women get NCAA matchup

The brackets for the NCAA women's basketball tournament are out and UAlbany has its matchup: The #12 seed Great Danes will face #5 seed Florida Gators at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse Friday at noon. The game will be on ESPN2 (and also available via WatchESPN).

As the seeding indicates, a Great Danes win would be an upset. But it might not be that surprising. UAlbany was very competitive in games against big schools such as Tennessee (a #7 seed in this year's tournament). And in last year's NCAA tournament the Great Danes almost pulled the upset against Duke.

UAlbany has been on a remarkable streak of success in recent years. This will be its fifth straight appearance in the NCAA women's basketball tournament. The Great Danes have one of the Capital Region's all-time great college basketball players -- senior forward Shereesha Richards has now scored 2,403 career points (best all time at UAlbany) and is the three-time conference player of the year; she had three straight games of 30+ points in the America East tournament.
