Mini dogs

The mini chili-dog capital of America is... the Berkshires? Can that be right? We're thinking that might not be right. (Seriously, though, we're curious about the history of the mini chili hot dog and how it took root here in the Capital Region... and, supposedly, in the Berkshires.) [Lucky Peach]

When it comes to mini-dogs, I would be more apt to trust Mr. Dave who seems to have studied the matter, rather than some guy from California who vacations in the Berkshires.

Slowly raises hand... It seems like I can't escape from mini hot-dogs slathered in meat sauce, having grown up in North Adams with Jacks and then ending up in Troy with Famous Lunch.

Western MA has its own little mini-hot dog empire, similar to what we have here in the Capital District. North Adams, Pittsfield, Troy, and Watervliet all have had similar economic trajectories (mill town gone bust, brief resurgence, urban renewal, blight, tax drama, modern resurgence, nostalgia, etc) so it seems reasonable that they would have similar cheap-eats hold outs. In terms of continuous business, Jack's has been around since 1917, besting Famous Lunch and Gus's.

Jack's/North Adams is worth the day trip for anyone who enjoys tiny tubes of meat topped in a meat based sauce. Mayor Alcombright, if you're reading this, please feel free to use that as the city's official slogan but only if you let me march in the Fall Foliage Parade this year.

Ha! When that post came out I harangued Lucky Peach via twitter. I'll see if I can find a link to the tweets...
