Today's moment of spring
While on an Otto walk this afternoon, we noticed the north side of Buckingham Pond in Albany was dotted with these tiny white flowers (and a few dandelions). They are, we're pretty sure, a type of violet.
The purple streaks in the white petals are lovely.

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Oh yes, very lovely -- feel free to walk up Holmes Dale and pick as many as you'd like off my front lawn. They are a pernicious invader - I administer a constant herbicidal barrage attempting to rid myself of them.

I love native wildflowers! They're pretty easy to transplant, too. I planted a bunch for my mom a few years ago and they spread and grew in around my other perennials.

I pray that "R" is only kidding about the herbicidal barrage - this is one of the major sources of pollution in Buckingham Pond. See:http://www.buckinghampondconservancy.org/sites/default/files/Schaefer-SienaReport-2010.pdf

I have noticed that my parents and a lot of folks in their demographic have a very specific idea of what their landscape should be - antiseptic, uniform, etc - golf course turf. It's a shame because there's so many great flowers and plants that are local and easy to grow. :(
