Hitting the brakes in Austin
Farther afield, but perhaps of note because of taxi discussion here: Uber and Lyft have stopped operating in Austin, Texas after a proposition that would have repealed certain city rules for taxi-app companies -- such as fingerprint background checks for drivers -- was defeated by voters. The vote was culmination of a six-month fight between the city government and the companies over regulation -- the two taxi-app services spent $8 million trying to get the proposition passed.
