Arts and sciences

Fence
The annual Fence show is now on display at the Arts Center of the Capital Region -- it shows art works from members of the center. Blurbage: "This year we accepted and displayed 382 pieces, including paintings, drawing, photography, fiber arts, stained glass and sculpture. There is also a separate category for young artists in grades K-12." on display through June 26

Smart cities
Wednesday: The Electric City Innovation Center in Schenectady is hosting a discussion about "smart" cities. Blurbage: "Join local innovations and smart cities experts to discuss how the [internet of things], cloud, big data, mobility and social applications are going to impact the cities of the future." There will be panelists from GE, Civiq, and Ruckus Wireless. Wednesday 7 pm (pizza and networking at 6 pm) -- free (registration required)

RPI Colloquy
Friday: The annual commencement colloquy at RPI this year is titled "The Unity Underlying Diversity: Multi-cultural, Intellectual, and Geographic." Panelists include Ertharin Cousin, executive director of the UN World Food Program; David Skorton, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution; Steven Weinberg, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist from the University of Texas; and Rensselaer president Shirley Ann Jackson. Friday 3:30 pm at EMPAC -- free (registration required)

Hidden Garden Tour

Thursday: The annual self-guided Troy Hidden Garden Tour is in/around the Sage/Washington Park neighborhood. Tour blurbage:

While most of the gardens are approximately the same size, about 20 feet by 30 feet, they vary greatly in style. Some of the gardens feature charming pathways, fountains and pools. Some are filled with flowers, while others have more plants and vegetables -- all lovingly tended by gardeners of all skill levels.

This is the 17th year for the event. The tour is a fundraiser for The Friends of Prospect Park. Thursday 4-7:30 pm -- $10

A few cooking classes this week:

Classic Southern Cakes
Tuesday: Leah Stein leads a class at Spoon and Whisk about making two southern cakes: Hummingbird Cake and Coconut Dream Cake. Tuesday 7 pm -- $45

Chinese take-out
Wednesday: Gio Culinary Stuio has a hands-on class about making Chinese take-out classics at home. "Students will learn how quick and easy it is to make delicious, Chinese take-out food all from scratch." Wednesday 6:15 pm -- $65

Sushi
Wednesday: Market Bistro in Latham has a class on making sushi: "We'll teach you how to make the perfect rice as well as the techniques needed to roll and slice sushi, then you'll create your own unique sushi rolls." Wednesday 6 pm -- $50

Friday: Deanna Fox leads a hands-on class at Different Drummer's Kitchen about making lasagna Bolognese and tiramisu. Friday 6 pm -- $65

1. This is sort of the lull before summer starts in full. So it's a good time to get summer plans nailed down -- whether it's a trip, or just a vow to eat more ice cream. (And you should -- eat more ice cream, that is.)
