Montreal
If you've never been to Montreal, it's worth a visit sometime. It's so close -- about 3.5 hours by car -- and it's, like, a whole other country. A recent travel piece in the Guardian about Montreal highlighted some of the neighborhoods and spots that might be worth a look: "Montreal's not the new Brooklyn or the new Seattle. It's not France, Great Britain or America. It's not even really Canada. It's its own thing, an island city." [The Guardian]

Montreal is an excellent airport to fly out of to reach the rest of Canada or Europe or Cuba. Plus, plane tickets bought with Canadian dollars these days are cheaper.

To reinforce Mary's comment - last September we flew a non-stop, round trip to Paris for less than $640 out of Montreal aboard Air France. Flying out of JFK was close to $400 more, aboard a shitty US carrier; same flight from ALB via some out of the way US hub was close to $1300. Plus, it's a lot easier to drive in and out of Montreal than it is the NYC metro area and takes about the same amount of time accounting for the NY traffic. Long-term parking at YUL is cheap as well - we left out vehicle for close to 30 days for less than $200. Double bonus: no TSA.
