"A classic planning blunder"

The ongoing drama in Syracuse over what to do about replacing I-81 through the city is worth watching here because The Ongoing 787 Discussion. So, maybe it's notable what Andrew Cuomo said Thursday about the potential plan to take down the elevated highway in CNY: "That could be a transformative project that really jump-starts the entire region ... I-81 did a lot of damage -- a classic planning blunder. Let's build a road and bisect an entire community. That's an idea, yeah, let me write it down." [Syracuse Post-Standard]

Cutting the city in half happened in several communities- Rome NY being a fine example. Erie Blvd separated the business district & City Hall from the southern part of the city. I suppose they didn't consider that to be an issue at the time because in the name of Urban Renewal most of the Dominick St business district was removed. The 1960's solution was that if you had an empty lot it would get developed. Didn't work in Albany (Pastures District) and didn't work in Rome, or Newburgh.

More like a classic engineering blunder.
