The next flood
Over at The Nation, Virginia Eubanks looks back at the flooding in Troy during/after Irene and considers the future of her South Troy neighborhood along the Poestenkill and other areas of the city that are set to be crunched by rising flood insurance premiums: "[W]e'll probably be the last owners of our charming, crumbly house, which has stood at a crucial intersection of a lively working-class neighborhood for more than 150 years. I've had to work hard--emotionally and practically--to be OK with that." [The Nation]

Regrettably, nothing was sad about the canalization of waterways by the Army Corps of Engineers demigods that has eliminated natural floodplains that would mitigate storm damage immensely. Louisiana suffers severely as a result of their levee system. All so rich soil could be claimed for farming and more land could exist for productive uses. We need to reestablish wetlands and floodplains and not build in them to begin with unless you're elevated.
