Syracuse's 787
We've been watching from afar the state Department of Transportation's years-long decision making process about how to replace the elevated portion of I-81 in downtown Syracuse -- because the experience there could provide hints of how such a process regarding I-787 in downtown Albany might go. The Syracuse project is now down to two options: what's essentially a modern replacement of the elevated highway that slices through the city ($1.7 billion), or converting the stretch though downtown into a boulevard ($1.3 billion). After living in Syracuse for a couple of years, the elevated highway really does cut the city in half. I'm hoping that they go with the boulevard option, especially since there's already a highway (481) to take traffic around the city.
