Red Barn no more
The state Department of Environmental Conservation knocked down the "Red Barn" in Keene -- a landmark for many people in the Adirondacks -- this week. "The increased risk of building collapse due to its deterioration, weight of winter snows, and the continued use by people, caused DEC to determine the building must come down to ensure public safety." (Here's a photo from this past fall, a bunch of other photos on Flickr.)

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.

I'm sad to see the barn go, and annoyed with DEC for doing it with no explanation until it was already done. I'm copying my comment from the DEC Facebook page:
I don't understand why the barn had to come down yet the collapsing structures in Tahawus are allowed to remain - there are people in those actively collapsing structures on a daily basis.
This barn was the Adirondack equivalent to the Teton's Moulton Barn / Mormon Row. Those barns are maintained by the park agency instead of torn down, because the agency recognized their value as a viewpoint/attraction. Those barns are also wide open to the public, so there must be a solution to the issue of potential liability if someone is to enter them and get hurt. It would have been much preferable to seal off the open windows/doors instead of tearing down the Keene Barn.
