Holding water, or not
An interesting bit turned up by Amanda Fries in this look at how the city of Albany is assessing its options for fixing the big, 85-year-old swimming pool in Lincoln Park: The pool has always leaked -- a lot. From a city engineering report in the 1930s: "The pool would not hold water in the very beginning without losing a considerable quantity through the many joints which exist and which were constructed in this pool." The lower "bowl" of football fields doesn't seem to have much trouble holding water. With the field being ripped apart by flag football this year, it also becomes a sticky mud pit whenever it rains. I almost lost a boot walking my dog late this fall, but now I avoid it until it dries or freezes over.
