Fewer trans fats, fewer heart attacks
Between 2007 and 2011, eleven counties in New York State -- including Albany County -- banned restaurants from using trans fats. And a study published in JAMA Cardiology this week concludes those bans prompted lowered rates of heart attacks and strokes in the years following. The researchers used data from the state Department of Health for counties that did, and did not, ban trans fats. Other scientists not connected with the study point out there could be other factors that contributed to the difference, but the results generally line up with other studies.
