A 21st century station

Michael Kimmelman, the architecture critic for NYT, argues that Andrew Cuomo's plan for building a new train hall next to Penn Station in Manhattan doesn't address many of the real problems with the transportation hub -- and that the governor has chosen political expediency instead of a significant, fundamental upgrade. (As you know, the vast majority of train trips in and out of Albany/Rensselaer, one of the nation's busiest stations, involve New York Penn Station.) [NYT] Earlier: The plan for a new NYC train station. (For real this time. Probably.)

Yes this is a short-sighted plan. Related, with a massive office and residential population increase on the west side over the next 10 years, Penn will continue to be woefully inadequate. As for Schenectedy, don't build ugly. Comings and goings should be a memorable event. (Just adding this as I believe Schenectedy is planning for a new Station).

Are we letting Perfect be the enemy of the Good? while NYT is right about its comparison about the 2 car garage, doing nothing is not an option, and doing more may not be in the cards (ie State or Federal Budget) unless the Feds launch the much talked about/but not enacted $1Billion infrastructure initiative.

Let's be clear about Cuomo's role....the proposal to convert the Post Office to train service goes back to at least a 1999 $60Million dollar proposal by Sen Moynihan and President Clinton (the famous/infamous "chip" design feature of David Childs and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill), and was in the mix again in 2005, and again in 2009
