Troy, demographics, policing, and perceptions of crime
Albert Samaha of Buzzfeed News looks at police/community relations in Troy -- including the disproportionate arrest rates for people of color -- and frames the situation as part of a demographic shift occurring in many small cities: "As black and brown people leave major cities to raise families in areas that were once predominantly white, they're encountering police departments that are slow to reflect those population shifts and all too eager to placate longtime white residents who equate change with rising crime." Yes, clearly only racists would have a problem with loud car stereos, open-air dealing, and night club riots. Thanks Buzzfeed for spotlighting this unacceptable intolerance!
