"I wish Americans could see our faces. They need to understand, we're real people, too."

At The Atlantic, Michael Frank talks with farm owners and farm workers in the Hudson Valley about the how the apparent stepped-up efforts of ICE has undocumented workers fearful and farm owners worried. He writes: "As in the rest of the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as much as half of the farm workforce in New York is undocumented. The fear of deportation looming over Hudson Valley farmworkers is also impacting farmers--what they're willing to plant and what they think they'll be able to harvest." [The Atlantic]

So now farm businesses might need to factor in the price of legal, documented labor. Oh the horror!

Herbert - are you willing to pay $5/lb for chicken at Price Chopper and $20 for a meal at McDonalds? If not, you need to support slavery v. 2.0 ... oh, sorry, politically correct term is "undocumented immigrant" these days. And yes, they are totally free to go - and if they have nowhere to go, it is not our problem!

Excellent Read. Thanks for sharing.

I work in the healthcare field. On a daily basis I see a vast amount of hardy young people between the ages of 20-35 who are already on "permanent" disability for a wide range of psychosocial issues.....the numbers have tremendously increased over the past 20-30 years.....many could work......if they had to.....and is there any reason for people like Golub to live like kings while the farm workers live like peasants??? Lots of things need to be addressed...
