Beer and farms
New York's farm brewery license has helped prompt a big increase in the number of breweries around state -- the number has doubled over the past five years to more than 300. But those farm breweries are required to use an increasing portion of New York-grown hops and barley -- and, as this Post-Standard articles highlights, farmers and agricultural support orgs are working to keep up with the demand from breweries. One sign of how things are changing: hops are now being grown on more than 400 acres in New York, up from 15 in 2010. [Syracuse.com]
