nine pin cider works exterior 2016-11-05

Drawing's closed! Winner's been emailed!

Nine Pin Cider has its annual Pressing Party November 11. The cidery will be releasing the 2016 batch of its "Cider Monster" variety, pressing more than 100 different varieties of apples from local orchards for next year's Cider Monster, and there will be food, music, and games.

We have a pair of tickets to give away -- and they each include a bottle of the 2016 Cider Monster. To enter the drawing, please answer this question in the comments:

What's your favorite of type of apple? Why?

Yep, this originally said Albany instead of apple (because brain/typing problems), which actually ends up being an interesting question. So answer however you like -- favorite apple or Albany. (Thanks, everyone.)

We've asked this question before and it's fun to see everyone's preferences. (One of the things about living in this part of the New York is that we can get a bunch of different types of apples.)

Pressing party blurbage:

Nine Pin's PRESSING PARTY will include pressed paninis from Sweet Mama Mia, french pressed and aeropressed coffee, body presses through massages from Albany Massage, T-Shirt pressing from Troy Cloth & Paper, an apple jug bench press competition sponsored by North Albany's CrossFit Beyond, sliders from Slidin' Dirty Restaurant and Food Truck, tastings from Albany Distilling Company, pressed donut ice cream sliders from The Dutch Udder Craft Ice Cream, free temporary Nine Pin tattoo presses, a pie eating contest where you can press your face into a delicious apple pie, and more!

Tickets are $15 ahead / $20 at the door and included a pour of cider. There's also a $30 ticket that includes a bottle of the 2016 Cider Monster, and a $5 ticket for designated drivers.

The party is Saturday, November from 11 am-6 pm at the cidery in Albany.

Important: All comments must be submitted by 11:59 pm on Sunday, November 5, 2016 to be entered in the drawing. You must answer the question to be part of the drawing. (Normal commenting guidelines apply.) One entry per person, please. You must enter a valid email address (that you check regularly) with your comment. The winner will be notified via email by noon on Monday and must respond by noon on Tuesday, November 7.

My favorite type of apple is a juicy crunchy honey crisp. Love the freshness of them. But to be honest as long as it's straight from the tree, any of them will do. Delish.

My favorite type of apple is empire. They are crisp and tart!
I love love love ninepin, my signature drink!!

My favorite kind of Albany is the Albany that makes room for every body. Kind of like the honey crisp apple (my favorite kind!)...a city where we can be sweet, juicy and snappy all at the same time.

Favorite kind of apple is most definitely pink lady.

My favorite type of apple is Snapdragon! Seriously, try them if you see them around! They are crisp and not too sweet.

Definitely a Honey Crisp.

A Mac a day what can I say
That's the way to keep
The doc at bay hay hay

My favorite apples are Granny Smith because they are tart and juicy and have a fabulous snap/crunch to them :o)

(And they go oh so well with peanut butter!)

Empires in the Empire State

Empire....It's tart and sweet and so, so crisp!

Favorite apple is Granny Smith. Love the name, tartness, and works great in apple based desserts.

Macouns! Discovered them last year while apple picking. They are great on their own but also worked well in apple crisp.

My favorite apples are honeycrisp. They're perfectly crisp and tart and sweet.

Fuji apples are pretty good

The Jonathan from my ancient backyard apple tree ...

My favorite time of apple is any apple in a warm apple crisp topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream :)

Honey Crisp!!!

My favorite apple is from the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. Wouldn't be entering this contest without it.

Empire - great for all purposes from baking to sauce to salads. Sweet and tart and great picked from a local orchard!

The Gala. Come on, it's a classy party!

Granny Smith- no doubt my favorite.... or whatever apple is in Nine Pin's latest creation.

My go-to apple is definitely Empire (glad to see them getting so much love here) but I also enjoy the Ashmead's Kernal apples at the Co-op. They're very different with skin like a Bosc pear and a really delicious taste.

And my favorite type of Albany might be the one in Western Australia that is a lovely beach town.

Gala - the optimal mix of crispness, tartness and sweetness

My favorite kind of apple usually has no name. They're the apples I snag from abandoned apple trees marking historic farms or homesteads at historic sites, nature preserves, or even front yards of vacant homes. They're delicious, often on the tart side, and come with the satisfaction of honoring the memory of that long-ago person who had the foresight to plant a tree for the generations to come.

I'm a McIntosh Red girl!

Classic and versatile - and that first bite of a fresh one in the fall is close to heaven!

I like Gingergold apples. They're crisp and not cloyingly sweet, but have an interesting subtlety to the flavor.

HoneyCrisp

McIntosh. They have the best flavor and are by far one of the best multipurpose apples. Although, the new RubyFrost is a pretty great eating apple.

Fuji. Crisp, firm, not too sweet.

Cortlands! Crisp, beautiful, and not too sweet.

I like Gala- they are good for eating and baking.

Galas have always been my favorite for snacking.

Empire is my favorite apple

Sweet and crisp like a Fall morning!

My favorite apple is one eaten right in an orchard on a fall day- it doesn't matter the type. And my favorite Albany... NY. Although to be fair, I haven't been to any of the others.

Fuji apples. Not too sweet.

Fuji. Always Fuji.

My favorite apple is the Northern Spy. Virtually impossible to find but when you do you're rewarded with a super crisp, tart juicy apple.

Giant honey crisps are my favorite! Bursting with flavor!

Gingergold. They almost glow from inside and have a very thin skin.
It’s hard to buy a dwarf tree of this kind though!

Nothing makes an old-fashioned pie quite as good as a McIntosh!

I like the local apples from the two women at the Empire State Plaza farmers' market. (Too bad I can't remember the name of the farm, huh?) Whatever types they have in fall are pretty much awesome, but I prefer tarter apples.

Red Delicious, because of its sweetness. It’s also delicious in pies.

Gala! Honeycrisp is over-hyped.

I'm not picky when it comes to apples because I love them all, but if I'm telling the truth some of these varieties have gotten a little too big for their britches. Gala and Golden Supreme - I mean, come on brag much? Golden and Red Delicious - Arrogant! I think I'll decide what's delicious thank you very much! Fuji- are we supposed to give humble points because you picked the 35th highest mountain in the world even though everyone knows it's the prettiest? And don't get me started on the Pink Ladies - we all saw how they treated Sandy at the beginning of Grease. The new Snapdragon is the best not only because it's not one of those mushy weird apples but because it sounds tough at the same time as being an awesome (and highly underated) flower.

Listen, I get that people are going to call me basic, but honeycrisp is *not* overhyped. It's delicious. It's not mealy, it' crisp and sweet, and just right. It's so hip(ster?) to hate on honeycrisp. That's like hating on happiness. (Answer: Honeycrisp!).

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
