Tunnel vision in Syracuse
Watching the ongoing back-and-forth over how to replace the aging, elevated portion of I-81 that runs right through the heart of Syracuse has been interesting in that it's a preview of the issues the Albany area will face when it starts deciding the future of I-787. And the latest episode from the Salt City -- about the continued push for a tunnel even though it'd be crazy difficult and expensive -- is sobering if only for the fact that the cheapest option on the table (a boulevard) would cost... $1.3 billion. Based on the recent repair work on 787 and the south mall arterial, my guess is that we are stuck with both of them for another generation.
