There are a lot of arguments for the value of local news, but this is one we haven't seen spelled out so directly before: A trio of researchers say they've found evidence that the closure of a local newspaper ends up affecting the financial health of local governments because of a lack of oversight and resulting increase in borrowing costs. Here's a write-up at City Lab.
The Capital Region still has relatively robust local news coverage (for now), but outlets have been contracting and there are things like public meetings that just don't get the coverage they once did.
