Craft weed

It looks like New York State is leaning toward legalizing recreational marijuana. Among the issues related to that: There's a potentially very big business opportunity as part of a multi-billion dollar industry into which money is already flowing into the state -- but there's concern that local communities will get pushed aside by corporations. On that topic, this Verge interview with the author of Craft Weed: Family Farming and the Future of the Marijuana Industry is worth reading.

(And again, we're going to bump our idea for New York to think about creating a "farm" license for marijuana, the same way it has for smaller-scale farm breweries and the like.)

I have a relative with chronic pains related to cancerous cysts on her spine. She qualifies for medical m.j., but chooses to purchase home grown weed due to the creeping GMO issue and it's introduction into this burgeoning industry, particularly with "big money" sniffing big profits.

Pot advocates pre-legalization:
"Pot should be legal! This way the people can get what they need, the government can regulate and tax it, and everyone will be better off!"

Pot advocates now:
"Why is the government getting involved with pot? I should be able to grow and smoke and sell my own for fun and profit without the government taxing and regulating the industry!"

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
