The Sanctuary for Independent Media

Who:
The Sanctuary for Independent Media

Project:
Rehabing the stage of The Sanctuary for Independent Media

The Sanctuary For Independent Media is an independent media arts and education facility in Troy, NY. Operating out of a historic church in Troy, we work to provide a variety of high quality progressive programming to the capital district and beyond. The Sanctuary has recently gone High-Def. We now own several digital video cameras and are working to improve our own Internet television site at Media Sanctuary TV.

Our next major goal at the Sanctuary is to improve the stage. By creating one flat platform, improving the lighting design, and adding a curtain to cover the screen during live performances, we could take the production value at our venue to the next level.

By redesigning the stage, we could increase the size and variety of artists who perform at the Sanctuary. We could see more performances from the widely popular play about Sam Cooke last season, to the sold out performance of Jaymee Stone and the Room of Wonders this spring.

A large part of the capital district community has come to enjoy performances and speakers here at the Sanctuary. These improvements in combination with our transition to high-def will greatly increase the production value of our events here.

We've had a lot of great events at our facility. Some of our past performers include:
+ New York Times bestselling author and investigative reporter Jeremy Scahill,
+ Democracy Now's Amy Goodman,
+ Poets Amiri Baraka and Jayne Cortez
+ Many local music acts including Mother Judge, the Kamikazee Hearts and the Restys.
+ The Free Jazz Series
+ Author and activist Chris Hedges
+ Incredible international music: including Jaymee Stone, Khaira Arby, Bassekou Kouyate, Billy Bang, Haale, Chiwoniso, Hamiet Bluett and much, much more.

We've been working to rehabilitate the historic church we own in North Troy. During the time we have been here, we have added the Underground Art Gallery, the Borderline Cafe, and recently have completed a major roof repair.

By building a better stage, in combination with our new high-def cameras, will take our productions to the next level. We are dedicated to remaining in this location and continuing to provide the type of programming you have come to expect from us.
