Project:
Bringing the future home of the Troy Bike Rescue up to code.
Troy Bike Rescue (TBR) is a collective of bicycle enthusiasts committed to removing bikes from the waste stream, and putting them back into use as affordable transportation. TBR also works to build bicycle community through hands-on education.
We've been growing so much at TBR, we've outgrown our current location at 51 3rd Street in Troy NY. We often see 30 people pass through the doors during open shop hours in the spring and summer months looking for help repairing their bicycle or for a bicycle to adopt.
In response to this increased demand for our services, two Troy Bike Rescue members have purchased a warehouse in North Troy for the shop to move into. This space will improve our capacity to serve the community. Not only will we have more room to work in, but we will be closer to many of the people who have been coming to the shop for help with their bicycles.
Troy Bike Rescue will also have access to a vacant lot near the new building, and it will increase the organization's capacity to have more outdoor bike rodeos and other events like Bike Bike Northeast.
We do have one challenge though to being able to accomplish all these new goals. Currently TBR is working to bring the building up to code and get a certificate of occupancy. Winning this prize would help us purchase the remaining construction materials to accomplish this goal, such as new ceiling tiles, paint and other items. We've been putting a lot of work into the space, using donated parts and labor, and have made great strides towards getting ready to open.
Troy Bike Rescue has been committed to recycling and encouraging the use of bicycles since 2001. By supporting Troy Bike Rescue, the community can be sure the project will be continuing to build community through bicycles for many years to come.
