Five Fall Finds: men's edition

button down shirts

Always in style: button-down shirts.

By Amy Brozio-Andrews

Last week, we ran down five fall styles for women popping up in local stores. Here are five finds for guys...

Steve & Barrys honey smacks tshirtMacys American RagCIE hatH&M mens messenger bagT-shirts
If the t-shirts you've been wearing all summer are looking grungy, you can grab new ones at Steven and Barry's (yes, they're still open); for $8.98 or two for $15, indulge your inner child with board games, breakfast cereals, comics legends, and toy brands emblazoned across your chest.
Also try: Heritage 1981 and American Eagle Outfitters

Hoodies
Layer your new t-shirt with a hoodie when the days turn colder. Old Navy's got thermal hoodies ($39.50).
Also try: Burlington Coat Factory and American Eagle Outfitters

Hats
"Top" it all off with a new baseball cap. Macy's at Colonie Center has American Rag Cie hats in plaids, stripes, and corduroys for $24.50. If fedoras and caps are more your style, try Gap.
Also try: Lids

Button-downs
The Eddie Bauer Outlet in Colonie has a wide selection of long-sleeved poplin button-down shirts for $29.99.
Also try: Gap, Old Navy, and Heritage 1981

Messenger bags
Carry home all your new stuff in a new brown men's messenger bag from H&M, $24.90.
Also try: Macy's, Eddie Bauer Outlet, and Burlington Coat Factory

The material of the shirts at Steve & Barry just doesn't work for me. I bought a few there hoping that they'd get softer as they broke in but, like colonoscopies, they just never became comfortable.

Plato's Closet has a decent range of interesting tees, and they're generally a bit higher quality and even lower price.

H&M is a good place for men's hoodies, they're well built and fit great. Maybe I have some kind of general body deformation but it's hard for me to find a hoodie that really fits without being too short or binding up somewhere. You'll have to get used to the zipper on the left side though, must be some strange European thing.

Marshall's is a good spot for deals on messenger bags too (or you can just call them what they are, a "man purse"), look in the luggage section. You kind of have to get lucky though. The new store in Clifton Park would be a good bet, that place is amazing.

Or, you could just do what I do: steal all your clothes from Sebastien.

B: first, kudos for putting the words "Clifton Park" and "amazing" in the same sentence. I've lived there 2 years, and things that come to my mind are more along the lines of: "oh-God-I'm-so-bored-please-somebody-stab-me-in-the-mouth", or "let's-watch-that-damn'-squirrel-for-the-next-two-hours", or "I-can't-wait-for-my-date-at-Friday's".

I buy my clothes online, and I won't tell where: the last time I ran into somebody with the same geeky t-shirt as mine, a cat-fight ensued. It was a Thundercat shirt, of course.

I found a very nice man purse online last week, and I will disclose the merchant in two weeks, once I've had enough time to parade.

But seriously, I'm European and H&M doesn't fit me so well. Then again, the Nutella pizza might be to blame. I however found 3 pairs of Euro-trash jeans at the Colonie Center Mall, I'm pretty sure it was at Macy's, or one of the big store at either end of the mall.

Actually if anybody knows where to buy trendy shoes...

I'm not talking about clown shoes, Pantaloons.

I only meant that the Marshall's was amazing, the rest of Clifton Park could technically not exist and my world would be largely unchanged, aside from a noticeable drop in annoying suburban drivers on the weekends.

When are you going to buy the WiFi detector tee from th-- um, that site you don't want to mention?

You may be European but you, like me, have some sort of whole-body genetic mutation. Plus you're bald, which has some kind of Telly Savalas effect; you look okay in a suit but anything else will look like it was designed just for you by one-armed dyslexic cave spiders with an astigmatism.

Thankfully, it all looks great on me.

Re: Sebastien
Don't worry, I'll leave the fashion advice to Amy because I don't know a thing about it. But if you ever find yourself in desperate need of lyrics to Andrew Lloyd Webber rock operas, don't hesitate to consult me. I'm a total expert in that area.
Jesus Christ... Superstar.... Do you think you're what they say you are? Jazz hands!!!

Sounds funny, but the men's section at H&M is the BEST PLACE to find a good diaper bag.

Those man bags have lots of pockets, a gender neutral color that my husband can carry, and I can easily run into the grocery store sans baby without dying of embarrassment.

So you guys do SOOO much great stuff. Food, entertainment, fashion... I love you and read you every day.

And then this drek???

Is AOA's fashion advice really to go to crossgates, buy some cheap t's, a corny scenester hat, a hoodie, a man purse and a shirt from Old Navy? This article looks like someone took 15 minutes looking around the mall and recommended that you buy what the most "scene" 17 year old was wearing. Are you employed by Pyramid by any chance?
Even if you never left the mall, I think that the new store in crossgates that does custom made suits for 500 bucks deserves a mention.

I love you, and I think this is AOA's first article about mens fashion (could be wrong there) so I will just call a DO OVER!!!

Sorry if that was mean, but I calls 'em like I sees 'em.

Ahem, Erik, that would be a corny hipster hat. Get it right.

Do you think the new suit store could make me a custom-fitted hoodie? Maybe something in seersucker?

What about an Electronic Drum Kit Shirt?!

"An electronic t-shirt with a picture of an actual playable drum kit on the front? That's right. Hit the drums on this shirt with your finger and they play through the built in speaker..."

Come on. Your name is on it.

No no, I'm not as comfrotable with people touching my chest as you are, much less pounding on it. Plus I wouldn't want to steal all the attention when I go to shows, you know, with my skillz. That's right, with a z, for extra zippiness.

Have you seen that Domokun has gone mainstream? Well, more mainstream. Official Target Halloween mascot yo. I'm looking for a full size Domo costume myself. I'll let you know if I find a French version.

I apologize. You are correct. It is a hipster hat. I apologize to those who are "scene", "emo", or otherwise "fashion impaired" who may have been offended. I believe it was Real Big Fish who said:

"Please don't hate me 'cuz I'm trendy. Everyone who looks like me is my friend."

Seriously?!

:(

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
