Stuff to do this weekend

EATS gingerbread house

One of the winning entries in last year's HATAS gingerbread house competition.

It's a weekend in November and there's not a snowflake in sight. So get out and do something.

Here are a few ideas.

Swing
The DanceFlurry org has swing dancing tonight at the Elks Lodge in Albany. Lessons are 7:30. Live music from Gordon Webster starts at 8:30. It's $15 general admission, $10 for students.

Pretty
The Holiday Studio Sale at The Woman's Club of Albany will have jewelry and art from local artists. Friday 5-9 pm, Saturday 10 am - 5 pm.

Bid
Historic Albany is holding its 7th annual exhibit and silent auction of art inspired by Albany architecture. "Built" starts at 7 pm Saturday with cocktails at the Cathedral of All Saints. Tickets are $50.

Rita Moreno and champagne
Bow Tie Cinemas in Schenectady is showing West Side Story as part of its Movies & Mimosas series on Saturday. Doors open at 10:30 am, show starts at 11. Tickets are $5 -- and mimosas are only $2.

Home sweet home
The Homeless and Travelers Aid Society -- you probably know it as HATAS -- will displaying the gingerbread houses entered its Home Sweet Gingerbread Home competition at Crossgates at Saturday between 11 am and 6 pm. The houses will be auctioned off at the Fort Orange Club next Thursday.

Modern music
The Arraymusic ensemble is playing EMPAC's concert hall Saturday night at 8 pm. Quoth the Village Voice of the ensemble, "ARRAYMUSIC is one of North America's more astonishing founts of new music." And according to the Toronoto Globe and Mail, they play "some of the most exciting performance works of this century." And they're Canadian, too, so they're probably nice about being such badasses. Tickets are $15.

New genes
There are a couple of new exhibits at the Schenectady Museum. Putting DNA to Work promises "hands-on activities specifically designed to encourage visitors of all ages to examine DNA sequences, and see how that knowledge can be used to unlock the secrets hidden in our genes." And Hall of Transgenic Organisms of New York State is an "installation encourages you to consider the impact and implications of genetic research in your life, and explore your own ethical reaction to the science of genetics." Admission is $6.50 for adults and $4 for kids.

Take a walk
Take advantage of the warm weather and shuffle through some leaves. Looking for a place to walk? We have a few ideas.

just a quick note or two on the arraymusic performance tomorrow night (saturday) at EMPAC: the ticket breakdown is general admission = $15, Rensselaer faculty + staff / non-rensselaer students / seniors = $10, and Rensselaer students = $5. for more info, check out http://www.empac.rpi.edu/events/2008/array.html - i am writing from the concert hall where they are currently rehearsing, and it certainly sounds like it will be money well spent.

Wake the Folk Up IV at SUNY Cobleskill's Frederic R. Bennett Ski Lodge on Route 10, Cobleskill is set for Saturday from 11 am-6 pm.This event features workshops about social and environmental awareness and activism and a low impact potluck lunch. Local bluegrass/Americana band Tom Wadsworth and the Skeleton Band will conclude the event.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
