Roller derby's back this weekend

hellions poster Dec 2008 boutThe Hellions of Troy will be taking on the Green Mountain Derby Dames at The Fun Spot in Queensbury this Sunday. It'll be the first Capital Region bout for the team, which was formed in September after the big local roller derby bust up.

The Hellions are promising "serious, hyper aggressive, fast-as-lightning" sporting action at Sunday's bout. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids (you can buy 'em online). It starts at 6 pm.

The Capital Region's other roller derby team -- the Albany All Stars -- are back in action January 24 at the Washington Ave Armory.

Yay for chicks on skates roughing each other up. Give me a pbr and I might just call it heaven.

Queensbury?! Good god that's far.

Nah - not really. It's almost right across the street from Great Escape!

This might help in explaining why the Hellions are in Queensbury & Glens Falls:

If you have a 15,000 sf facility closer to Albany that will allow us to skate on the floor, we'd love to hear from you.

In the meantime, we're being welcomed with open arms at The Fun Spot and the Glens Falls Civic Center.

One minor correction/addition to that article:

"All Stars members planned to support the Hellions as well."

As I understand it, members and volunteers from the All Stars have attended all of the Hellions' bouts so far to show their support.

Final Score: Hellions 182 Green Mountain Derby Dames 92

Thanks to everyone who braved the cold and came on up to Queensbury for roller derby, music, and fun - most especially the Albany All Stars who came out in force. Yes, they did drive out to the SufferJets/Hellions bout in October just as Hellions were at the Horrors/Empire Skate Troopers bout that month.

Roller Derby is a fantastic sport which we love and we love the sisterhood of it. While the fans might be looking to dig into business and personal differences, I have no doubt if the All Stars and the Hellions had to duke it out about who loved derby more it would be a dead tie. At the end of the day, 8 wheels and a love for the sport we all have in common no matter what.

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
