Stuff to do this weekend

synecdoche.jpg

Yes, you can see it. But not in Schenectady.

The decorating, shopping and wrapping are done. The gifts are exchanged. And there's still a weekend ahead. Yes! OK, so what are you going to do? Here's what we're looking at. But as always, if you've got other ideas, we'd love to hear them.

Winterfest
Music, kids performers, a 5K run and fireworks. The 3rd Annual Albany Winter Fest kicks off Saturday afternoon at venues all over the city. The full schedule is at albanyevents.org

Oz in Schenectady
Here's our kids pick. The Wizard of Oz opens tonight for a week long engagement at Proctor's Theater in Schenectady. No, not the movie, a full blown stage show complete with poppy fields, flying monkeys and local munchkins. Tickets range from $20 to $50.

Dance
The Crooked Lake House in Avrill Park is hosting another Ballroom, Swing and Latin Dance Party in their historic ballroom. Free lesson at 7:15 PM. $10 to dance all night. 674-3894.

Saratoga Savoy's Milonga/Tango Party, Saratoga Savoy Center of Dance, 7 Wells St., Saratoga Springs. Saturday from 8-11 $10.

Albany Art Room
Get out of the house and play with art supplies! For $5 a half hour you can play with paint, crayons, clay and do all kinds of art projects at The Albany Art Room.

Catch a movie
There are tons of Oscar contenders on Capital Region screens this week. No, Synedoche isn't playing in Schenectady, but it is playing at The Spectrum

Four for $100
Grab three friends and try this. It's fun, and less than 100 bucks for all of you.

Eat!
You know you're going to be visiting with friends and family this weekend. Do it over some of the yummiest foods in the Capital Region. You'll find some of our favorites here.

Comments

I recommend "Synecdoche, New York," but be warned that it's one of those movies where just when you think you have it figured out, the filmmakers throw another twist in to make you scratch your head and wonder again. See it a few times, and then check out the forums on IMDB to participate in the lively debate. Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who in the past has done Summer theater in nearby Williamstown, is excellent in his role of playing a small town amateur theater director in Schenectady who gets a shot at mounting a more ambitious production in the Big City. I can say no more, except that synecdoche rhymes with Schenectady, if you were wondering how to pronounce it.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.

Albany tightened its rules for shoveling snowy sidewalks last winter -- so how'd that work out?
