Stuff to do this weekend

roller derby poster cropSo with Valentine's Day falling on a Saturday, if you haven't gotten a restaurant reservation yet you may be out of luck. Need a back up plan? Check out our list of fun stuff to do with your valentine -- or whoever -- this weekend.

Are we missing something? Tell us about it.

Roller Derby
The Hellions of Troy meet the Ice Queens of Central New York for the Fire and Ice Bout on Sunday at The Fun Spot on Route 9 in Queensbury. Doors open at 5. The bout starts at 6. $10. Kids under 12 are free.

Sing out Louise
Got an inner Sinatra? Why keep him locked in the shower? Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County is holding their annual Karaoke contest at Revolution Hall tonight. It's $5 to watch, $13 to sing. And it's all for a good cause.

Dance, Dance,Dance
Saratoga Springs will be one big giant dance party this weekend. The Dance Flurry Festival has everything from swing to square dancing to zydeco. Dancers and musicians from around the world will perform and give lessons. The festival kicks off tonight and runs through Sunday at venues all over the city. Prices vary. You can download a full schedule of events and costs.

If you'd rather not brave the Dance Flurry crowd, you can swing at the Danceland Valentines Ball on Saturday night at 8 at the Albany Elks Lodge, 25 S. Allen St. $15 gets you the dance plus chocolate desserts. Yummmm.

Catch a concert
This is an insanely good weekend for music in the Capital Region. Here are a few of our picks:

Margan and the Red Lions are at St. Rose tonight. And hey, the show is free.

Ben Karis Nix and Amanda Rogers will be at Bread and Jam Coffeehouse in Cohoes tonight at 8. Cost? Also free.

Scientific Maps will be at 51 3rd St. in Troy along with Miami Ice Machine and Cave Weddings. Things get underway at 9:30. $5 suggested donation.

On Saturday B3nson Collective presents Lovefest 09 at Valentines in Albany, featuring Barons in the Attic, We are Jeneric and others.8 p.m. $5

And last, but definitely not least, the Valentine's Day Prom with Tittsworth and Goodship at Revolution Hall
8 p.m. $10 stag / $15 for a couple / $2 off with college ID

Movies
The Saratoga Film Forum will be showing "Stellet Licht" (Silent Night) "the latest film from Mexican writer/director Carlos Reygadas, who delivers an extraordinary, transcendent meditation on love and religion." Friday at 8 p.m. and again at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

The Sanctuary for Independent Media mixes movies with live music. NYC-based percussionist William Hooker will improvise a live soundtrack to pioneering African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux's 1920 silent classic "The Symbol of the Unconquered." 8 p.m. $10 suggested donation.

Oh, and only one week till the Oscars. We're just sayin'.

See a Play
Home Made Theater in Saratoga is doing Christopher Durang's "Beyond Therapy." A NYC romance through therapy visits. Fri-Sat at 8:15 PM, Sun at 2 PM.$21-27.

HMT is doing a free reading of Christopher Durang's "Laughing Wild" on Sunday afternoon at 3.

Capital Rep's Biggest Little International Play Festival continues this weekend with "The Love Hungry Farmer" Fri at 8 PM, Sat at 4 PM and 8:30 PM, Sun at 2:30 PM. $17-39.

Freak out!
RPI's Engineers face off against Yale in their biggest hockey game of the year, The Big Red Freakout. Things get underway on Saturday at 7. Wear red, know the rules and remember, whatever happens, Clarkson still sucks.

Make your own valentine
There are lots of fun art supplies at The Albany Art Room.

Have a snack.

Valentine's Star Gazing
Weather permitting (and it looks like it will permit) RPI's Hirsh Observatory will be open on Valentine's night for a little star gazing.

Mrs. Slacker and I will be spending a lovely Valentine's Day finishing our taxes, among other things, and then Sunday, DAYTONA 500, BABY!

No, seriously.

Well, that didn't take long. Maybe I'll go out to dinner with my wife now that I have the free time.

There's nothing like two pretty girls in dresses taking each other to "prom" on VD-Day. We might not win prom king and queen, but we're defiantly prom court material.

Saturday, Feb 14 at 2PM

There may also be other local performance of the show, these are just two I happened to have heard about.

Don't forget Mirk and the New Familiars at Red Square tonight!

Promise of New York Playing for free at RPI's Biotech Auditorium:

A blogger turned stand-up comic, an obsessive political gadfly, and a
high school math teacher compete against each other and arch rival and
billionaire incumbent Michael Bloomberg for the post of New York
City mayor. As these ordinary citizens take politics into their own
hands, The Promise of New York explores the meaning of democracy
and the identity of a city with hilarious irreverence and thoughtprovoking
sensitivity.

Went to the "LoveFest" last night. One word: Awesome!
Barons in the Attic, We are Jeneric, Restys, & El Duke rocked Valentine's.

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
