New York is one of the best beer states

beer medals mapThat's according to an analysis of awards from the Brewers Association by drinks writer Rick Lyke (check out the map, too).

New York ranked #8 with the most medals since 1987. And a beer out of Rochester, Genesee Cream Ale, was tied for the second-most medals (10).

NY is one of the biggest states, so you would kind of expect that. But as Strange Maps concluded, New York also ranked in the top 10 on a medals per capita basis.

Actually, New York may not be in the top ten per capita. Re-read the wording on the Strange Maps site: "The top 10, reshuffled to reflect the number of medals per million of inhabitants..."
So, it takes the top ten in total medals and then orders them based on medals per capita. The list would look much different if it were the top ten States based on medals per captia. Even Utah comes in with about 3 times as many medals per million inhabitants than New York.

So this analysis says the best beer New York can come up with is Genny? Did they check what the medals were for? Perhaps the judges were drunk and thought it was funny.
